Race Overview

A small but intriguing field lines up for this Class 3 handicap over 1m2f at Redcar. With no standout front-runner and Timeform predicting a steady early pace, positioning and tactical speed could prove crucial on ground described as good to firm. Several contenders return from winter breaks, so market moves should be watched carefully, particularly for those absent 60+ days.

Leading Contenders

SEE THAT STORM (TFR 101p)
Unbeaten in three starts since joining Ed Bethell, this upwardly-mobile 4yo completed a hat-trick over this course and distance in September, displaying a strong turn of foot in steadily-run races. He returns from a 226-day break, but his trainer has a good record with fresh horses and he looks open to further progress. A steady pace is expected to play to his strengths, and his prominent run style should be a positive in a tactical contest.

Timeform comment: “Appealing as the type to rate higher still as a 4-y-o. Can make light of an absence.”
Pace hint: The likely steady gallop is expected to favour him more than others, notably over Lord Protector.

CREATIF (TFR 97)
This lightly raced Dubawi gelding made a striking handicap debut at Newcastle last month, drawing clear in the final furlong despite signs of greenness. That was his first start after a breathing operation and a six-month layoff, and there could be more to come. The switch to turf asks a new question, but his pedigree suggests it shouldn’t be an issue.

Timeform Flag: “Horse In Focus”
Trainer Trend: David O’Meara has won this race twice in the past nine years (Eeetee 2023, Strawman 2022), a notable pointer to his runner’s potential readiness and intent.

Main Danger

LORD PROTECTOR (TFR 103)
Although now a 7yo, he has posted two solid efforts since returning from wind surgery. A second at Newcastle in March and a close third at Ripon suggest he’s in good heart. Well-handicapped on older form (peak mark of 91), and he remains competitive off 84 here. Slight concern surrounds the weak pace, as he may not get the end-to-end gallop that suits best.

Timeform note: “Well handicapped and feared”
Positional risk: May be caught chasing the pace if they dawdle early.

Also Considered

EY UP ITS THE BOSS (TFR 100)
A consistent and genuine type who goes well at Redcar (C&D winner). He tends to race handily and could be well placed if the race becomes tactical. Reappeared with a respectable fourth at Ripon and should come on for the run.

PER CONTRA (TFR 95)
Lightly raced and back from a 197-day absence. He was competitive last season and has changed yards since. There may still be untapped potential, but he was well held when last seen. One to monitor in the market.

CHATURANGA (TFR 97)
Another returning from a break (32 days). Raced freely and hung left when last seen at Doncaster. Often best when allowed to stride on or get into a rhythm, but the forecast slow pace might not suit him ideally.

WHISKEY PETE (TFR ?) Three unplaced runs this year and yet to find form for his current stable. Was hampered last time at Doncaster, but overall profile suggests others are preferred.

Summary

This looks a good opportunity for SEE THAT STORM, who has both the form and profile of a progressive type ready to resume on a strong note. The tactical setup and track could suit him well. CREATIF is a fascinating rival with strong French and Newcastle form, and David O’Meara’s past wins in this race make him a key player. LORD PROTECTOR brings consistent recent form and handicapping scope, but a muddling gallop may not play to his strengths.

Keep an eye on the market for signs of support or weakness, especially for Per Contra and Chaturanga, both returning off breaks and with a little to prove on balance.
