17:10 Redcar – HANDICAP (Class 5, 0-75), 3yo, 1m2f1y, Turf, Good to Firm (Good in places)Thursday 1 May 2025 | £4,449 to the winner | 8 runners

·

This competitive 3yo handicap looks set to be run at a solid gallop, with multiple prominent racers in the line-up. The race is staged over Redcar’s extended 1m2f, where track position can be useful, but a strong pace forecast may play into the hands of those held up or settling off the lead. A few lightly-raced types step into handicaps for the first time, and past editions of this race have often favoured improvers over more exposed runners.

Leading Contenders

KIMEKO GLORY (Trainer: Mark Walford | Jockey: William Pyle (3) | OR: 71 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 89 → adj h’cap rating: 78)
A decisive 5½-length winner at Beverley last week over nearly this same trip, Kimeko Glory looked to relish the step up in distance and quick ground conditions. She travelled strongly and quickened right away once asked, suggesting her new mark still leaves her a few pounds ahead. The 6lb penalty may not anchor her if she repeats that effort. Timeform notes she’s likely to be dropped in again, and given the strong pace forecast, that may well suit. A leading player, though she may trade bigger in-running.

GENNADIUS (Richard Hannon | Joe Leavy (3) | OR: 70 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 80 → adj h’cap rating: 75)
Placed on all three starts to date in novice company and shapes as though he’ll improve further now tackling this trip. A strong-finishing second at Brighton last time, he was arguably unsuited by the sharp track, and a more galloping circuit should suit. Timeform flags him as “open to improvement,” and the Hannon yard often does well with 3yo handicap debutants in spring. He’s a colt to consider seriously.

DIVINE LEGACY (Julie Camacho | Ryan Sexton | OR: 74 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 87p → adj h’cap rating: 76)
A lightly-raced gelding by Siyouni out of Park Hill winner God Given, he showed steady progression at two, ending the year with a neck second at Beverley. Purchased for 35,000gns in the autumn and gelded, he now returns after 219 days off. Timeform marks him with a ‘p’ for potential and he’s bred to thrive at this distance. Fitness has to be taken on trust, and the market may tell the story here—worth monitoring closely for signs of support on return.

Main Dangers

SPRINGBOK (Richard Fahey | Oisin Orr | OR: 73 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 86 → adj h’cap rating: 73)
Had a race-fitness edge when mid-pack on handicap debut at Musselburgh, shaping fairly in a steadily-run race. He was well-backed there and is still unexposed at middle distances. Gelded over the winter, he could improve again for this step up, although whether he wants a searching gallop is open to question. Not dismissed.

WEST TYRONE (Kevin Ryan | Tom Eaves | OR: 73 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 88 → adj h’cap rating: 71)
Won well at Southwell in March but didn’t reproduce that effort next time in a deeper race. He’s shown his best form when able to dominate, but he’s unlikely to get an uncontested lead here. The pace setup looks against him, and while the raw rating is strong, the profile flags some tactical concerns.

Interesting Outsiders

BLUEANDTANGERINE (Michael & David Easterby | Joanna Mason | OR: 66 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 84 → adj h’cap rating: 69)
Hasn’t had much go her way in two starts this spring, including when short of room at Beverley. Her Beverley maiden win last term came on soft, but she looks the type to build again over this trip. Trainer form is under a cloud, but any signs of revival from the yard would boost her each-way appeal with 3 places available.

RAULIN (IRE) (David O’Meara | David Nolan | OR: 75 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 83 → adj h’cap rating: 70)
A £150,000 purchase at two, and shaped fairly in novice races. Returned from gelding op and five-month break when tailed off at Musselburgh, but that race was a muddling affair and he was relatively weak in the market. Steps up in trip now, and notably, O’Meara has a profitable record when stepping horses up in distance. Market strength would be interesting.

CANGOFAR (FR) (Tim Easterby | David Allan | OR: 66 | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 79p → adj h’cap rating: 68)
Another long lay-off runner with upside. He’s been gelded since last seen and showed ability at Nottingham and Redcar as a juvenile without being knocked about. Should stay 1¼m on pedigree, but this looks a learning run unless the betting says otherwise.

Trainer Trends & Notes

  • Kevin Ryan trained the 2022 winner Viadelamore.
  • David O’Meara is flagged in Timeform Smart Stats with a positive ROI when stepping horses up in trip, relevant for Raulin.
  • Julie Camacho often places her 3yo handicappers well on seasonal return but rarely rushes them; Divine Legacy may be one to note for later in the season unless backed.

Summary

This looks a well-contested Class 5 with improvers from top yards and a strongly-run race in prospect.

  • Kimeko Glory is a justified top pick on recent performance and profile, with conditions and pace setup ideal.
  • Divine Legacy and Gennadius are the most interesting unexposed types, with the former needing a market check after a long layoff.
  • Raulin and Blueandtangerine appeal as each-way options at bigger odds, particularly if the market speaks for them.

Final Word: If Kimeko Glory is anywhere near the form of her Beverley win, she’s going to take some beating. But if the race turns into a war of stamina late, Divine Legacy may be the one to emerge from the pack.
