The Grade 1 Champion INH Flat Race is the traditional highlight for bumper performers at the Punchestown Festival, attracting the season’s top novices and often functioning as a rematch for runners who clashed in the Cheltenham Champion Bumper. This year’s renewal sees a select field of seven go to post, with several significant profiles in play and some intriguing pace and trend angles.
🟩 Leading Contender
BAMBINO FEVER (W.P. Mullins / Miss J. Townend)
Timeform adjusted rating: 137
Unbeaten in three starts and already a Grade 1 winner, Bambino Fever is the standout on form. She followed up two comfortable mares’ bumper wins by taking the Cheltenham Champion Bumper in good style, showing stamina and tenacity to come from off the pace and win going away. Her effort there is comfortably the best piece of form on offer. Timeform noted she was “nicely on top by the line” despite racing wide and facing a stronger field than she had previously encountered. The pace forecast is for a steadily run race, which she has handled before. She looks set to run her race again and Willie Mullins has trained five of the last six winners of this race, including Redemption Day, Facile Vega, and Kilcruit.
🟨 Main Dangers
COLCANNON (Noel Meade / Mr D. O’Connor)
Timeform adjusted rating: 128
This lightly raced son of Berkshire comes here fresh, having won a Grade 2 at Leopardstown in February. He wore a first-time hood that day and travelled sweetly before asserting late, suggesting he’s improving sharply. He bypassed Cheltenham and that freshness could count for plenty here. However, it’s worth noting he returns after 88 days off, so any market weakness close to the off would be a concern. Timeform flagged that he “looks a much-improved model” and his closing sectionals at Leopardstown support that view.
COPACABANA (W.P. Mullins / Mr P. W. Mullins)
Timeform adjusted rating: 123+
Well backed before finishing a long way behind Bambino Fever at Cheltenham, this well-related son of Blue Bresil had previously looked useful when easily winning at Navan. He appeared outpaced on the quicker ground at Cheltenham and may appreciate this return to yielding ground. The Timeform ‘p’ symbol highlights his scope for improvement, and with Willie Mullins and Patrick Mullins combining again, he can’t be discounted despite having to find plenty. Another to note after 49 days off, so the late betting signals will be informative.
KALYPSO’CHANCE (Gordon Elliott / Mr H. C. Swan)
Timeform adjusted rating: 121
A Grade 2 bumper winner at Navan, he was disappointing in the Champion Bumper, finishing 11th. He raced prominently that day but failed to see it out. Returning to Punchestown, where he’s previously scored, could help him bounce back. He’s a big, angular sort who may do better once sent hurdling, but his earlier listed form entitles him to a place shout here. Gordon Elliott has won this race once before, with Colreevy (2019).
🟦 Interesting Outsider
SWITCH FROM DIESEL (Ross O’Sullivan / Mr R. W. Barron)
Timeform adjusted rating: 120
A strong traveller who’s improved with racing, she has won her last two starts in listed mares’ bumpers at Naas and Fairyhouse. Those were lesser contests in truth, but her recent form has been visually impressive, and the pace scenario might suit her. A weak early gallop could allow her to settle and travel into contention late. While she faces a major class hike, she’s in peak form and isn’t easily dismissed for place money.
🟥 Outsiders with Questions
CLASSICAL CREEK and SUNNY SOUTH WEST are well-exposed and have been found wanting in lesser company. The former was third behind Kalypso’chance last time but was never threatening. The latter caused a surprise at Clonmel but this is an altogether different level. Both look likely to struggle on the bare ratings.
🔎 Race Trends and Stats
- Willie Mullins has trained 8 of the last 10 winners, including several Cheltenham winners doubling up here.
- 5yo runners have a strong recent record, winning 8 of the last 10 renewals.
- Recent Cheltenham Champion Bumper form is a reliable guide – each of the last 6 winners had run at Cheltenham, with 4 coming directly from the Champion Bumper.
- Runners absent over 60 days have a mixed record – it’s wise to watch the market for support or drifts on Colcannon, Copacabana, and Kalypso’chance, all returning from breaks of 49+ days.
🧾 Verdict
Bambino Fever sets a clear standard and looks the one to beat if repeating her Cheltenham form. Colcannon appeals as the chief danger if fit and ready after a break, while Copacabana has potential to leave his Champion Bumper run behind. Switch From Diesel is a likeable improver who could benefit from the pace scenario, though she faces a big step up in class. Keep a close eye on the market late for any signs regarding fitness and stable confidence, particularly with the Mullins and Meade runners.
