🏇 13:45 Newmarket (Rowley) – Nyetimber Newmarket Stakes (Listed Race)

·

Race Conditions: 1m2f | Listed | £31,190 to the winner | 3yo Colts | Good ground | 6 runners (1 non-runner)

This year’s renewal of the Nyetimber Newmarket Stakes, a Listed contest over 1m2f for three-year-old colts, features a small but classy field with a mixture of unbeaten prospects and horses stepping up to stakes level from promising novice campaigns. The going is currently good, and the pace map suggests a weakly-run affair, which may favour those able to travel comfortably and quicken off a steady gallop.

🥇 Leading Contender: Alpine Trail (Charlie Appleby / William Buick) – Timeform Rating: 104p (Adj: 106)

Unbeaten in two starts, this son of Dubawi progressed again when stretching out to 10f at Yarmouth last time, dictating steadily before quickening clear with authority. He boasts a deep pedigree (dam won the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont) and has been strongly supported in both starts. Appleby has won this race twice in the past three years (Castle Way in 2023 and Nations Pride in 2022), and William Buick rides Newmarket particularly well (29% strike rate on the Rowley course). On adjusted ratings, he sets the standard and remains open to significant improvement.

🔎 Main Danger: Aurel (Ralph Beckett / Rossa Ryan) – TFR: 102p (Adj: 103)

Absent since winning on debut over a mile at Kempton back in October, Aurel came from well off the pace to land what has proven a solid maiden. His pedigree points to strong staying potential (by Soldier Hollow out of a Sleeping Indian mare) and his sectionals from that win suggest he could be a well above-average colt. The layoff of 179 days means market support should be watched closely—any strong move could indicate confidence from a stable whose runners typically improve markedly from first to second start.

🧨 Notable Challenger: Ernst Blofeld (John & Thady Gosden / Robert Havlin) – TFR: 101p (Adj: 102)

By Frankel out of a high-class Dubawi mare, Ernst Blofeld improved from his debut to make all in a Kempton novice 11 days ago. The Gosdens have a 21% strike rate with 10f+ runners, and this colt is bred to thrive at this trip and beyond. The step into Listed company is a logical progression. However, his front-running style in what is forecast to be a tactical race could leave him vulnerable if pressured by stronger travellers. Still, a serious player with a Group-level pedigree.

⚠️ Interesting Outsider: Nebras (John & Thady Gosden / Hollie Doyle) – TFR: 108 (Adj: 100)

Nebras returns to turf after an underwhelming odds-on defeat at Southwell in April. He had previously looked useful when winning a Newmarket maiden and is a half-brother to Nashwa, the Group 1 Nassau Stakes winner. At his best, he has the talent to get involved, but that recent performance raises questions. Drifting in the market would be a concern, though connections are respected and the booking of Hollie Doyle draws attention.

⬇️ Outside Chance: Harvey (Peter Chapple-Hyam / Ryan Moore) – TFR: 99 (Adj: 96)

A winner in France last summer and twice placed in conditions races, Harvey brings more experience than most but may lack the raw potential of the top three. He was outclassed in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud last time and could be tapped for toe if this becomes a test of turn of foot. Ryan Moore rides, which is a plus, but he’ll need a big step forward to trouble the principals.

📈 Trainer Trends

  • Charlie Appleby has a strong record in this race, landing it with Nations Pride (2022) and Castle Way (2023)—both went on to perform at a higher level.
  • John & Thady Gosden won the race in 2020 with Mishriff, who later became a global Group 1 star.

🧭 Conclusion

This small field looks like Alpine Trail’s race to lose. On ratings, form, and profile, he is the likeliest winner, especially given the stable’s excellent record in this race. Aurel is the intriguing unknown and could make it interesting if ready first time up—watch the market closely. Ernst Blofeld and Nebras both bring useful form and pedigree depth, but may be at risk if the Appleby colt gets first run off a steady gallop.
