14:35 Goodwood – Friday 2nd May 2025RACEHORSE OWNERSHIP FROM £25 AT RACINGCLUB.COM HANDICAP (Class 2) (0-105)5f | 4yo+ | £20,616 | Going: Good | Runners: 8

·

This Class 2 sprint handicap over the sharp 5f at Goodwood sees a mix of race-fit contenders and returning sprinters, with several having shown useful form in stronger company last season. A fairly even pace is predicted, which may slightly favour those racing handily, with prominent racers historically faring better than those held up off the pace unless there’s a strong gallop – which doesn’t appear likely on paper.

The race has been won in recent years by the likes of Raasel (2022) for Michael Appleby, who is represented again here by Shagraan, and Desperate Hero (2024) from the Jack Channon yard, also represented again.

🔶 Leading Contenders

SHAGRAAN (TFR 116 | Trainer: Michael Appleby | Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa)
A progressive sprinter last season, he won over C&D before posting a career-best at Haydock. His final start in the Portland at Doncaster is easy to forgive given the competitive nature of the field and the big field scenario. Now gelded and returning from 230 days off, he’s high in the weights but remains lightly raced for his age. His trainer won this race in 2022 and the booking of SDS catches the eye. Market support would be notable on this seasonal return.

MISS ATTITUDE (TFR 115 | Trainer: Jack Channon | Jockey: Kieran Shoemark)
Won well at Southwell earlier in the spring and was repeatedly denied a run when unplaced in a listed event at Bath 12 days ago. She has a slightly awkward action but possesses early pace and stays on well. Her narrow second in a C&D handicap last summer reads well. While she may need a stronger pace than expected to be seen to best effect, she’s capable of bouncing back.

TOCA MADERA (TFR 114 | Trainer: Brian Meehan | Jockey: Tommie Jakes (5))
Returned with a good second behind Regal Envoy at Newmarket two weeks ago and looks to have come forward from his 3yo campaign. Often travels strongly and will appreciate the return to a sharper 5f if able to sit in behind the leaders. Carries an adjusted rating matching the principals and could well improve again. He remains with potential for his yard, who don’t often overface their runners.

⚠️ Main Dangers

HOLKHAM BAY (TFR 114 | Trainer: William Knight | Jockey: Brandon Wilkie (3))
Completed a useful hat-trick last year before failing to land a blow at Southwell last time. Has early tactical pace and a prominent running style which suits this track, but tends to find less off the bridle and has traded short before being beaten on multiple occasions. That makes him more of an in-running player than a strong betting proposition. Trainer has a good record with single runners at meetings, showing a healthy level-stake profit.

TATTERSTALL (TFR 113 | Trainer: Michael Dods | Jockey: Connor Beasley)
Another returning horse to note, having gone well in a series of 5f handicaps last year. His win here over Miss Attitude in July underlined his liking for this track, and he showed good early speed that day. Michael Dods has sent only one runner to this meeting, and it’s this one – worth watching the market for strength or weakness after 246 days off.

RHYTHM N HOOVES (TFR 112 | Trainer: Robert Cowell | Jockey: Luke Morris)
A consistent sort with wins on the all-weather earlier in the year. He’s effective at both 5f and 6f and can adapt to different paces. Not always the easiest to win with, but comes here race-fit and his form has held up well. Unlikely to be far away.

🌟 Interesting Outsiders

EXISTENT (TFR 114§ | Trainer: Stuart Williams | Jockey: Warren Fentiman (5))
Without a win in a long time but remains capable on his day. Has run well at Epsom and this sort of turning 5f suits his strong-travelling style. The issue is pace – if the race is steadily run, he’ll likely be at a disadvantage. However, he often trades shorter in-play and can pick up pieces late if they overdo it up front. The § Timeform symbol highlights a degree of suspicion about his resolution.

ROSARIO (TFR 114 | Trainer: Roger Teal | Jockey: Cieren Fallon)
Limited appeal on recent evidence, but his TFR is in line with the field and he’s shaped better than the bare result at Kempton earlier in the year. That said, he’s now had several chances in similar company and needs to show more spark to feature.

📈 Trends & Pointers

  • Michael Appleby has won this race before (Raasel, 2022), and sends in-form Shagraan.
  • Jack Channon’s yard won this in 2024, and Miss Attitude went close over C&D last summer.
  • In the last five renewals, 4yo and 5yo winners dominate.
  • Several of the principals are returning from long breaks (Shagraan, Tatterstall, Holkham Bay) – the market should be a useful guide to their fitness and intent.
  • Timeform comments suggest Holkham Bay has a habit of trading short before fading, and Miss Attitude is better than she showed last time.

📝 Verdict

SHAGRAAN appeals as the likeliest winner if ready to go after his break. His C&D form, proven turf ability, and stable’s past success in the race all strengthen his case. MISS ATTITUDE could be the value play if overlooked after Bath, while TATTERSTALL is interesting at a price for a yard with a good single-runner strike rate at meetings.

Each-way backers have options here, particularly with TOCA MADERA and RHYTHM N HOOVES likely to be in the mix if the pace allows.
