14:55 Newmarket (Rowley), Saturday 3 May 2025Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Palace House Stakes (Group 3) (5f, 3yo+, £48,204), Going: Good, 11 runners

·

The Group 3 Palace House Stakes provides the first sprint pattern test of the season for older horses and has attracted a competitive field of 11, including a mix of proven speedsters and progressive types. Run over five furlongs on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the race is often a stepping stone to Royal Ascot’s King’s Stand Stakes, and past renewals have gone the way of classy types like Far Above, Lazuli and Vadream. Notably, Robert Cowell has trained the winner three times since 2011 and is well represented again this year.

Strongest Contenders

No Half Measures (Trainer: Richard Hughes | Jockey: Ryan Moore)
Timeform Rating: 117p
This improving filly enjoyed a prolific three-year-old campaign, winning six of her nine starts, culminating in a smooth success in the Group 3 World Trophy at Newbury. She shaped particularly well on her final start when a closing fifth in the Prix de l’Abbaye – a run which strongly hinted that there’s more to come in 2025. She has plenty of tactical speed and can travel smoothly off a strong pace, though this will be her first run in 209 days. A key player on form, but with no run since last October, market support would be reassuring.

Washington Heights (Trainer: Kevin Ryan | Jockey: Tom Eaves)
Timeform Rating: 113
Winner of the Abernant Stakes over 6f on this card last year, he showed his effectiveness at this level and this venue. He was last seen finishing second in a strong renewal of the Dukhan Sprint in Qatar and has proven himself versatile over both 5f and 6f. His fitness is assured and he looks solid, although not especially progressive. Still, he’s a reliable yardstick and should go close if things fall right.

Tropical Storm (Trainer: Andrew Balding | Jockey: Oisin Murphy)
Timeform Rating: 112p
A lightly raced three-year-old who won a York listed race last summer before placing in the Group 2 Flying Childers. He receives a full 9lb weight-for-age allowance, which makes him a dangerous proposition against older rivals. He’s entitled to improve again and has shown speed and professionalism for a colt with only six starts. Trainer Andrew Balding has a good record with three-year-olds pitched into older Group company early in the season. Live chance if handling the faster early fractions.

Main Dangers

Clarendon House (Trainer: Robert Cowell | Jockey: Sean Levey)
Timeform Rating: 112
Cowell has an excellent record in this race, and Clarendon House made a smart reappearance when landing a listed contest at Southwell in February. He’s consistent and effective over five furlongs on quick ground and has often been thereabouts in pattern sprints. His hold-up style could be a slight concern if the race becomes a burn-up on the stands’ side, but he’s one to keep firmly on side for each-way purposes.

Twilight Calls (Trainer: Richard Spencer | Jockey: Jamie Spencer)
Timeform Rating: 114
Has hinted at high-class ability in the past, notably when second to Nature Strip in the 2022 King’s Stand, but has been sparingly campaigned and was sold for 80,000 gns over the winter. His finishing speed can be deadly in strongly run races, and this set-up may suit if the leaders go too hard. However, he’s winless since 2022 and is returning from 237 days off. Market support would be a positive indicator.

Beautiful Diamond (Trainer: Karl Burke | Jockey: Clifford Lee)
Timeform Rating: 113
A high-class filly at two and three, she won the Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes and finished runner-up in Group 3 company before being pitched into the Flying Five. Lightly raced and still improving, she has a touch of quality and will likely be aimed at bigger targets this summer. A dangerous one if fully wound up.

Interesting Outsiders

Rumstar (Trainer: Jonathan Portman | Jockey: Rob Hornby)
Timeform Rating: 110
A listed winner at Ascot last autumn and a horse who has mixed it with better in Group company. His record fresh isn’t especially encouraging, but Jonathan Portman has a notable level stakes profit with horses off a break. If they go too quick up front, his finishing kick could see him pick off the stragglers.

Seven Questions (IRE) (Trainer: Robert Cowell | Jockey: Luke Morris)
Timeform Rating: 107
Caused a surprise when landing this race at 33/1 last year in first-time cheekpieces. That form hasn’t quite worked out and he’s been regressive since, but the yard change and a return to Newmarket could spark a revival. He’s hard to back with confidence but equally hard to rule out entirely given the profile and trainer.

Other Notes & Trends

Trainer Record: Robert Cowell has won this race with Prohibit (2011), Goldream (2015), and Jumbee (2018) and saddles Clarendon House, Democracy Dilemma, and Seven Questions here.

Last-Time-Out Winners: Clarendon House and No Half Measures are the only horses to have won on their most recent start.

Layoffs to Watch: Horses returning from 200+ day breaks include No Half Measures, Rumstar, Seven Questions, Twilight Calls, Democracy Dilemma, and Beautiful Diamond. Market behaviour will be especially informative in these cases.

Verdict

No Half Measures has the best recent form and could well progress again in 2025, but the layoff means watching the betting is wise. Tropical Storm is fascinating with the weight-for-age angle and could pounce late with a clean trip. Clarendon House, with race fitness and Cowell’s record, is another to seriously consider at fair each-way terms. The race lacks a true standout, and with a strong pace almost guaranteed, closers such as Twilight Calls and Rumstar are not without hope at bigger prices.
