A small but select quartet go to post for the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes, a race that has often attracted smart older middle-distance horses on the early-season trail to Royal Ascot and beyond. Past winners include Hurricane Lane and Communique, and trainers such as Charlie Appleby and Andrew Balding both have strong recent records in this contest.

🏇 Leading Contenders

SILVER KNOTT (Charlie Appleby / William Buick)
Timeform Rating: 127 | Days Since Run: 62
A globe-trotting five-year-old who returned from a break with a polished success in the Group 2 Dubai City of Gold at Meydan. That effort backed up a productive 2024 campaign in the US, where he landed three Grade 2 contests over this trip. A robust gelding who travels strongly and handles quick ground well, Silver Knott is tactically versatile and shaped last time as if he retains all his ability. Charlie Appleby has won this race twice in the past three years, and the combination with William Buick (both operating at 29% strike rates at this track) makes for a compelling case. Having not raced for just over two months, the market could be a useful guide to his readiness.

AMBIENTE FRIENDLY (James Owen / Harry Davies)
Timeform Rating: 126 | Days Since Run: 17
Last year’s Derby runner-up (behind City Of Troy) who looked progressive during his three-year-old campaign, including an emphatic Listed win at Lingfield. Now with James Owen, he disappointed when sent off favourite on reappearance in the Earl of Sefton over an inadequate 1m1f, making the running for the first time and fading tamely. This return to 1m4f should suit much better, and he could be seen to greater effect if allowed to settle behind the pace rather than force it. If any runner is likely to improve on recent form, it’s him – but he still has something to prove against race-fit opposition.

⚠️ Main Dangers

DIVINA GRACE (Andrew Balding / David Probert)
Timeform Rating: 121 | Days Since Run: 20
A reliable and genuine mare, Divina Grace showed improved form on her return in the John Porter Stakes, making all to win narrowly. Her attitude and consistency are strong assets, though she’s likely to face more class and tactical pressure in this field. She may struggle to dictate in this company, but she’s no forlorn hope. Trainer Andrew Balding has done well in this race previously (including with smaller-priced outsiders), and this mare deserves her shot at this level again.

👀 One to Note

BELLUM JUSTUM (Andrew Balding / Oisin Murphy)
Timeform Rating: 119 | Days Since Run: 20
Progressed nicely as a three-year-old, including a win in the Listed Blue Riband Trial and a G3 success in the US. He shaped as if needing the run when fifth behind Divina Grace in the John Porter on reappearance and could take a step forward with that behind him. However, on Timeform figures he still has 8–10lbs to find with the principals, and any improvement might come over further in time. Likely to be seen staying on late but may lack tactical speed in this small field.

📌 Trends & Trainer Notes

  • Charlie Appleby has won 2 of the last 3 renewals of the Jockey Club Stakes (2023 with Hurricane Lane and 2021 with Yibir), and his runners are rarely undercooked for this meeting.
  • Horses rated 125+ by Timeform have won 8 of the last 10 runnings, underlining the class edge typically required.
  • Older horses (5yo+) have a solid record here, suggesting the extra maturity and development at this trip often plays to their advantage.
  • No significant draw bias at 1m4f on the Rowley course, and with only four runners, positioning and pace will be more decisive than stall number.

📣 Final Thoughts

This looks a strong opportunity for Silver Knott, who brings international Group form, race fitness, and a tactically-suited profile to a race his stable targets. If there’s a threat, it could come from Ambiente Friendly, who has the raw talent but needs to bounce back from a subdued return. The Balding pair are both capable, particularly Divina Grace with her determined running style, but they may find themselves short of the class needed to win at this level.

Recommendation:
Watch the market for signs of late support or drift on Silver Knott, whose fitness after 62 days off may be the only slight question mark. If he’s strong in the market, he should take the beating.
