16:05 Newmarket (Rowley), Saturday 3rd May 2025LAY AND WHEELER HANDICAP (Class 2) | 1m4f | 4yo+ | £25,770 | 0–105 | Going: Good | RTV8 declared runners

·

A competitive renewal of the Lay and Wheeler Handicap over the Rowley Mile’s extended 1m4f trip, featuring a field of eight with a blend of lightly-raced improvers and battle-hardened handicappers. A few arrive off significant breaks, so market signals will be telling, particularly for those reappearing after 60+ days.

Strongest Contenders

French Master (Timeform Rating: 107p)
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden | Jockey: Kieran Shoemark
Lightly-raced 4yo who won both starts in novice company last autumn, including an emphatic success at Kempton over this trip. Now makes his handicap debut off a mark of 95 and looks a horse of considerable potential. The Gosden yard has placed runners well in this race in recent years (e.g. Zabeel Champion winning in 2021). French Master’s profile suggests he may be Group-class in time, and he could make a short stay in handicaps if fully wound up. That said, he’s been off for 204 days — market strength or weakness will be informative on fitness.

El Cordobes (TFR: 104)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby | Jockey: William Buick
A solid and improving type who ran with credit in Dubai earlier this year, most recently when runner-up over this trip in February. His Newmarket trainer-jockey combo boasts a 29% strike rate at the course since 2021, and this gelding looks to have more to come off a mark of 100. Unlike French Master, he’s had a recent campaign abroad, so arrives race-fit. Given Appleby’s strength in similar races — including Teumessias Fox (2023 winner) — he’s a major threat.

Main Dangers

Knightswood (TFR: 97)
Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Jockey: Joe Fanning
Won a Ripon handicap over this trip just last week and has been nudged up 3lb. Well-handicapped on some of last year’s stronger efforts and has proven himself consistent when allowed to dictate or race handily. With a recent run under his belt and tactical pace, he’s well placed to run another honest race.

Insanity (TFR: 96)
Trainer: Alan King | Jockey: David Egan
Dual winner last year over similar trips and has a sound profile when fresh. Well beaten in the November Handicap on his final start of 2024 but is not without hope back at a less demanding venue. Absent for 175 days, and while Alan King’s horses often go well off a break, the betting will be a good guide to confidence levels.

Interesting Outsiders

Speriamo (TFR: 92)
Trainer: Philip McBride | Jockey: Warren Fentiman (5)
A mare in excellent form towards the end of last season, running well on the all-weather in the autumn. Back on turf here and looks on a workable mark if transferring that form across. McBride’s runners off a break have shown a strong level-stakes profit, and she appeals as an each-way player, especially with her low weight and ideal trip. Watch the betting after her 180-day absence.

Struth (TFR: 90)
Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Jockey: Jamie Spencer
Not the easiest to win with and can be headstrong, but he’s well treated now and showed promise on return when ridden aggressively. New headgear (hood) is applied, and if it settles him, he could go better than the odds suggest. Jamie Spencer is an interesting booking for this free-going sort.

Others

Lavender Hill Mob (TFR: 92) – Well beaten on return in a hot renewal of the Earl of Sefton. Reverts to handicap company and up in trip, but still has something to prove at this level.

Lieber Power (TFR: 91) – Strong form last summer, including in top-end handicaps, but hasn’t fired this season. Needs to bounce back.

Trends and Notables

4 of the last 5 winners of this race were 4yos, supporting both French Master and El Cordobes.

Winners often carry 9st+ suggesting class usually prevails.

3 of the last 4 winners were trained by yards with strong Newmarket strike-rates, including Appleby (El Cordobes) and the Gosdens (French Master).

Timeform’s Analyst Verdict highlights French Master as the likely standout on potential, with El Cordobes and Speriamo flagged as the main alternatives.

Summary & Market Watch

French Master is the standout on potential and adjusted ratings, but a 204-day absence means market signals are important.

El Cordobes arrives with match fitness and strong trainer/course stats.

Knightswood offers solid recent form and may get the run of the race.

Speriamo is a value each-way option with trends and trainer stats in her favour.

Keep a close eye on Insanity and Struth for support in the betting — both are capable off their current marks with a return to form.
