The Boodles Champion Hurdle is one of the centrepieces of the Punchestown Festival, often featuring rematches from Cheltenham and crowned champions defending their Irish turf. A small but select field of six goes to post this year, with recent form, course affinity, and jumping reliability all crucial in what looks a tactically interesting renewal on yielding ground, with a very weak early pace predicted.
🏇 Strongest Contenders
STATE MAN (TFR 176, W. P. Mullins / P. Townend)
Bidding for his third straight win in this race, State Man sets a clear benchmark for consistency at this track, boasting a record of 5 wins from 6 Punchestown starts. He was around five lengths clear and travelling best when coming down at the last in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. He has been a reliable jumper over two seasons and is reportedly none the worse.
Trainer Willie Mullins has won 5 of the last 10 renewals, and with Townend’s 46% strike rate at Punchestown, this duo will be expected to make another bold bid from a likely prominent early position. Off 52 days, market signals will confirm whether he’s fully over that Cheltenham fall.
CONSTITUTION HILL (TFR 184, N. Henderson / J. Bowen)
Still the highest-rated hurdler in training, Constitution Hill comes into this with his reputation bruised. After 10 straight wins, including multiple Grade 1s, he has fallen on both of his last two starts – at Cheltenham in the Champion Hurdle and again at Aintree in the Hurdle over 2m4f. He had a breathing operation earlier this year and is reportedly in good form at home, but confidence in his jumping is now a serious concern.
Despite his ability, he is without a win since December, and this will be his first run at Punchestown, so the lack of a recent run (29 days) and two heavy falls mean market support will be telling. Henderson previously won this in 2019 with Buveur d’Air under similar circumstances (after dual defeat), so redemption is not out of the question.
⚠️ Main Dangers
GOLDEN ACE (TFR 162, Jeremy Scott / Lorcan Williams)
This progressive mare has done little wrong and arrives off a career-high after winning the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham – albeit fortuitously, left clear at the last when both State Man and Constitution Hill fell. She’s been highly progressive all season, and her Kingwell Hurdle win showed she has tactical speed and stamina for 2m½f. This is a deeper contest, but she may well be improving still. Off 52 days, watch the market closely.
KARGESE (TFR 165, W. P. Mullins / D. E. Mullins)
A former Punchestown Champion Juvenile Hurdle winner and now County Hurdle victor, Kargese has been handled with patience by Mullins and shaped well when winning at Cheltenham. She carries smart adjusted figures and looks likely to be ridden cold again. She lacks the top-class open-age experience of her stablemate but continues to progress and looks well suited by the pace scenario. She is off 49 days, so the betting will reveal if she’s fully primed.
👀 Interesting Outsiders
BREAK MY SOUL (TFR 154, Ian Donoghue / Keith Donoghue)
Ran above herself when fourth in the Aintree Hurdle behind Lossiemouth and has some useful novice form. She has shaped like one who may go chasing next season but is still unexposed in open company. The ratings suggest she’s held, but her ability to travel strongly and act on yielding or softer ground gives her minor place potential if others underperform.
BOTTLER’SECRET (TFR 144, Aidan Melia / Danny Gilligan)
Hasn’t shown much recently and finished well beaten at Navan last time. Formerly with Gavin Cromwell and has a couple of juvenile wins to his name, but faces a class ceiling here. His tendency to race prominently could shape the pace slightly, but he’s 20lb off the best of these and will likely struggle to land a blow.
📊 Trends & Trainer Notes
- W. P. Mullins has trained 5 of the last 10 winners of this race.
- Punchestown track form is a major advantage, and State Man (5 wins from 6) is the standout in that regard.
- No horse priced bigger than 17/2 has won this race in the last decade – and every winner since 2014 has come from the top three in the market.
- All of the last 10 winners had run at least once within the previous 60 days – again a slight question mark for Constitution Hill and Golden Ace.
🔍 Summary
The 2025 Champion Hurdle hinges on whether Constitution Hill can recapture his best form after a shaky spring. On ratings, he remains the horse to beat, but State Man brings more recent, reliable form and thrives at this track. Golden Ace and Kargese are unexposed, but both would need a career-best to match the big two.
With tactical pace at a premium, State Man could be the one to gain first run. If Constitution Hill fluffs his lines again, the door is wide open for a hat-trick-seeking Irish champion.
