·

The Ballymore Champion Four Year Old Hurdle traditionally draws the season’s standout juveniles from both Cheltenham and Aintree, and this year’s renewal is no exception. A field of 12 lines up for this Grade 1, with a strong Mullins presence, two Cheltenham rematch contenders, and several lightly raced types open to improvement.

🔝 Strongest Contenders

LULAMBA (TFR 170p) – Nicky Henderson / James Bowen
Runner-up in the Triumph Hurdle, Lulamba emerged with real credit at Cheltenham, racing prominently in a strong gallop and edging ahead before being run down late by Poniros. The pace set-up here should again play to his strengths. With a Timeform rating of 170p and greater tactical experience, he sets a strong standard and is fancied to reverse the form. Henderson has won this race before (Fusil Raffles, 2019), and this French recruit looks a worthy challenger to the Mullins battalion.

PONIROS (TFR 170p) – W. P. Mullins / Paul Townend
A surprise 100/1 winner of the Triumph Hurdle, but it was no fluke. He came from well off the pace and found plenty to edge out Lulamba in the closing strides. Still open to significant improvement after just one hurdles run, though Punchestown’s track configuration may demand more tactical speed than Cheltenham. Mullins and Townend have dominated this race recently, winning eight of the last ten editions.

⚠️ Main Dangers

HELLO NEIGHBOUR (TFR 164) – Gavin Cromwell / Keith Donoghue
A dual Grade 2 winner at Leopardstown, including the Spring Juvenile, he was well beaten in the Triumph but that came on deep ground after a busy campaign. Has been freshened up (50-day break), and any market strength would be a positive. He’s a solid type, and Cromwell’s runners are rarely out of place at this level.

MURCIA (TFR 162+) – W. P. Mullins / Rachael Blackmore
Progressive filly who took the Grade 1 Anniversary Hurdle at Aintree in good style, pulling clear from a decent field. Proven on yielding and heavy, and while she’s not as flashy on raw ratings, her attitude and profile make her a danger to all. She’s also proven over a sharp 2m and could be a strong-finishing presence.

BLUE LEMONS (TFR 155p) – W. P. Mullins / D. E. Mullins
A wide-margin winner of the Percy Maynard Juvenile Hurdle last time, he looked very straightforward and has a good turn of foot. Still unexposed and bred to improve, he could sneak into the frame if taking another step forward. However, this is a notable jump in class.

💡 Interesting Outsiders

TOO BOSSY FOR US (TFR 150p) – W. P. Mullins / Harry Cobden
Shaped with potential on hurdles debut when mid-division in the Triumph. A €330,000 purchase with a Flat engine, he wasn’t knocked about and has scope for progress. If he’s sharper this time and better positioned early, he’s one of the more interesting at a price.

SONY BILL (TFR 151) – W. P. Mullins / S. F. O’Keeffe
Well-held in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham, but was a multiple winner in France and might have needed that outing. This is deeper again, though the tongue-tie remains on. Could be more of a long-term type but not entirely dismissed.

📊 Trends & Trainer Notes

  • W. P. Mullins has won 8 of the past 10 renewals, including Vauban (2022) and Lossiemouth (2023).
  • Paul Townend boasts a 45% strike rate at Punchestown and rides Poniros.
  • French-bred hurdlers and those with prior Grade 1 form dominate this race historically.
  • Juveniles with a break longer than 50 days (Hello Neighbour, Sony Bill, Poniros, Lulamba) warrant a close market watch, especially for support or significant drifts.

📌 Summary

This shapes as a fascinating renewal, with Lulamba likely to be more comfortable around Punchestown and holding strong claims to reverse the Triumph form with Poniros, who still holds untapped potential but may find this a more tactical affair. Murcia is thriving and looks a rock-solid each-way angle in a field of 12, while Hello Neighbour appeals if the market speaks positively. Mullins has strength in depth, and both Too Bossy For Us and Blue Lemons have scope to outperform their current marks if taking a step forward.
