A competitive Class 4 novices’ handicap hurdle over the minimum trip, with a strong pace forecast that may significantly influence the shape of the race. Nine declared runners line up, many of them unexposed or still searching for consistency, while the market is reshaping itself following the withdrawal of likely favourite Indemnity.
Key Contenders:
RENOIR (TFR 116) arrives on the back of a determined win at Hereford, where he came out best in a driving finish. That was his fourth hurdles start, and the first time he’d encountered a truly strong gallop – conditions he coped with well. However, the pace is expected to be unrelenting here, and while he’s capable, he may find himself on the back foot if unable to settle. Timeform flags his in-running drift tendency – he traded at double his SP in victory last time – suggesting he’s no certainty under pressure. That said, the form has worked out reasonably and he remains on a workable mark.
DIRTY DEN (TFR 118) has been a model of consistency for much of the season, with four runner-up finishes, and now finds himself in calmer waters after failing to figure in a small field at Taunton. The return to a big-field handicap, coupled with the expected pace collapse, should play to his strengths. He does need to prove his jumping can hold up in a strongly-run affair, but the raw form is there and his Timeform rating is the highest in the field.
ESTATE PLANNING (TFR 115§) has been given a ‘§’ symbol in Timeform, indicating a hint of temperament – and rightly so, having refused to race in the past. That said, his recent form is solid, particularly his close third at Ffos Las behind Mount Washington. That was a strong-run race and he kept on well, suggesting this setup may suit again. The main concern is his reliability at the start, but he’s an each-way player if consenting to jump off.
SCINTILLANTE (TFR 116) is a lightly-raced handicap debutant who could be very interesting granted a more prominent run. He shaped as if the outing was needed at Hereford after five months off, but his second to Brilliant Light at Worcester last autumn reads well. Timeform notes the strong pace is likely to advance his claims, and his best form has come on good ground. If there’s market support, it would be a notable sign.

Main Dangers:
KATANA (TFR 107) represents Nicky Henderson, who boasts a 24% strike-rate with hurdlers at this trip and a solid 17% with handicap debutants over hurdles. He’s been brought along steadily, and was a touch better at Ffos Las last time. He’s yet to convince with his jumping, but this is a notable step into handicaps and, with Henderson’s record, improvement is plausible. The market may be instructive for his chance.
BLACKIJO DAGROSTIS (TFR 111) took a step forward when fifth at Chepstow last time and represents a yard known for late-developing hurdlers. He wears a tongue-tie again, and while more is needed, the race might fall apart late, which could help him pick up minor money.

Outsiders to Note:
LAND GIRL’S LUCK (TFR 114) won a poor mares’ maiden at Sedgefield and was then beaten 17 lengths at Stratford. There may be more to come in time, but the flashing tail and the overall profile suggest she’s one to monitor rather than back here.
ASCENSION DAY and SADDLERS DREAM appear to be out of form and are hard to recommend on what they’ve shown to date.
—
Trends and Trainer Watch:
This race has no established past winner trend on record, but trainers like Nicky Henderson (Katana) and Emma Lavelle (Indemnity, now NR) are worth watching when targeting this sort of 2m novice handicap.
Watch the market closely for runners returning from breaks of 60+ days – that includes Ascension Day (124 days) and Scintillante (14 days), who may well come on from their last starts.
—
Conclusion:
With Indemnity missing out, this looks an open contest where tactics will be vital. Dirty Den is appealing given his consistency and suitability to race conditions, and he holds the highest Timeform adjusted rating. Scintillante could take a major step forward if sharper for his return and deserves respect in a race that may suit late runners. Renoir should be in the mix again but may not find things as favourable this time. Each-way punters should consider Estate Planning, assuming he starts cleanly.
