13:30 Chester – Wednesday 7 May 2025CAA Stellar Lily Agnes EBF Conditions Stakes (Class 2) | 5f 15y | 2yo | £25,770 | Going: Good🏇👇

·

The traditional juvenile curtain-raiser at the Chester May Meeting, the Lily Agnes, is often an early-season springboard for speedy two-year-olds with Royal Ascot ambitions. Run over Chester’s sharp 5f trip, the race places a heavy emphasis on early pace and a low draw, with the draw bias historically favouring stalls 1 to 5. A strong pace is forecast, and Timeform note that high draws are significantly disadvantaged.

Leading Contenders

ALI SHUFFLE (TFR 94p)
Kevin Ryan’s colt is two from two, landing minor events at Redcar and Beverley in convincing fashion. His professionalism and strong finishing kick mark him out as a serious prospect. He’s well berthed in stall 1 and should be prominent early under Sam James. Timeform notes he “quickened clear approaching the final furlong” last time – a trait well suited to Chester’s short straight. With the plum draw and form edge, he sets a high standard.

MISS PIGGLE (TFR 92p)
One of two Hugo Palmer runners in the field, she impressed at Southwell on debut, overcoming greenness to win decisively. She has the physical scope and pedigree to improve significantly, but stall 11 poses a real tactical challenge. Nevertheless, she’s open to plenty of progress and has Tom Marquand booked. A Timeform ‘p’ suggests further improvement is expected.

SOCIAL EXCLUSION (TFR 83p)
Also trained by James Owen, this filly made all in a three-runner Southwell maiden. She showed sharp early speed and could be suited to the track. The draw in stall 7 is manageable, and with Harry Davies on board, she should be in the mix if handling the rise in class. Her “p” symbol from Timeform indicates untapped potential.

Main Dangers

ARDISIA (IRE) (TFR 85)
Still learning on the job but has shown plenty of natural ability. She was green on debut at Musselburgh and again at Pontefract when third to Awraad, but she ran on late after a poor start and wide trip, suggesting the ability is there. Well drawn in stall 6 and representing Hugo Palmer, who has twice hit the frame in this race in the last five years.

ARGENTINE TANGO (TFR 87)
Trained by Tim Easterby, who has his string in flying form, this colt took a Pontefract maiden well last week. The yard has often been underestimated with juveniles at this meeting, and the colt’s Timeform rating of 87 marks him out as a possible improver. The draw in stall 8 is a touch awkward, but if he breaks well, he could get involved.

AWRAAD (IRE) (TFR 78)
Won a similar event at Pontefract last time and is clearly sharp. Trainer Gemma Tutty’s runners have been going well at smaller tracks, and Smart Stats note a £21.33 level stakes profit when she runs just one horse at a Flat meeting. He could go well again at a price, though he may need another step forward on the clock.

Interesting Outsiders

ARDUIS INVICTA (IRE) (TFR 85p)
Showed up well at Beverley on debut when a 40/1 second to a now-rated rival. A daughter of Invincible Army, she’s drawn well in stall 4 and has clear place claims if improving. Timeform’s “p” rating suggests that further progression is expected, and she could outrun her odds.

EXCLAMATION (IRE) (TFR 78)
Third in the Brocklesby but has disappointed since, running green at Newmarket. Grace Harris’s runners have been underperforming of late, and market support or a notable drift could be telling here. Stall 2 is a big plus, though.

BLAZING (TFR 108 IPS – pace projection only)
Callum Rodriguez rides for Edward Bethell, but the colt was well held on debut and may struggle in this company. Without a recent run (76 days off), he’s best watched for market signs.

Key Trends

9 of the last 11 winners had previously won a race.

Draws in stalls 1 to 5 have produced 8 of the last 10 winners.

Trainer Richard Fahey has won this race three times since 2015, but has no runner this year.

Front-runners are often favoured due to Chester’s tight turning layout and short straight.

Conclusion

Ali Shuffle sets the benchmark on ratings, professionalism, and draw, and deserves to be favourite. However, Miss Piggle and Social Exclusion both offer strong progression angles, while Ardisia and Argentine Tango are dangers if the pace collapses late or the leaders overdo it. For those looking beyond the obvious, Arduis Invicta is an interesting each-way play in a race where early positioning and draw will be critical.
