Race Overview

A typically competitive 3-year-old sprint handicap at Chester, where the low draw bias and potential for a blistering early gallop could prove decisive. Several unexposed types feature, with a mix of turf debutants, all-weather specialists, and C&D winners making this a tricky but compelling puzzle. Horses with a prominent running style tend to fare well on the Roodee, particularly when drawn low.

Strongest Contenders

HAMMER THE HAMMER (IRE) – Timeform adjusted rating: 113 | Trainer: Kevin Ryan
A striking 6-length winner on handicap debut at Southwell just 10 days ago, where he travelled strongly and quickened clear. He’s officially 6lb well-in under a penalty, and his form is hard to crab. However, this will be his first run on turf and his draw in stall 10 isn’t ideal given Chester’s layout. Timeform note he’s been beaten once before when odds-on in-running, so he’s not bulletproof. Nevertheless, if transferring his form to grass, he’s a major threat.

BOB MALI (IRE) – Adjusted rating: 107 | Trainer: Charles Hills | Jockey: William Buick
This son of Mehmas made a highly encouraging return from a 6-month break when second in a strong Newmarket handicap, a race already working out well. He’s a dual winner over 6f, including here at Chester, and has a prime draw in stall 2. With Buick booked and Hills in form, he looks to have an ideal profile. First-time gelding when reappearing and ran right to form — very solid contender.

Main Dangers

DILIGENTLY – Adjusted rating: 101 | Trainer: Clive Cox | Draw 1
Won a valuable sales race at York last season, benefitting from a strong pace. He’s drawn in stall 1 here and represents a yard that can ready one after a break. Absent 258 days, but showed plenty of ability as a juvenile and may be suited by the setup. Market support would be a positive indicator on seasonal return.

CYCLONITE (USA) – Adjusted rating: 100 | Trainer: James Ferguson
Comes into this off the back of a very solid third in the All-Weather Championships at Newcastle. Hasn’t raced on turf this season, but is in top form and drawn in 6, which should give him options. Timeform flags him up as a consistent type with blinkers back on — one for each-way players.

CABELLEROSO – Adjusted rating: 98 | Trainer: Hugo Palmer
Returned from a short break with a respectable run in Listed company at Lingfield. That form has substance, and this is a drop in class. The switch to turf and return to a handicap could suit, especially from stall 3. Should be sharper now, and market signals will guide.

Interesting Outsiders

END OF STORY (IRE) – Adjusted rating: 102 | Trainer: Mark Loughnane
Shaped as if needing the run on reappearance at Sandown after a 7-month absence. He’s got useful back-form from 2024 (including a York nursery win), and has potential to improve now fitter. High draw isn’t ideal (stall 12), but he may try to get forward. Could outrun big odds if strong in the market.

THE FLYING SEAGULL (IRE) – Adjusted rating: 104 | Trainer: Hugo Palmer | Draw 14
Unfortunate draw but interesting on course form — won his maiden here and was a head second last time at Lingfield. Always races prominently, so will need to break fast. Palmer has a good record with headgear angles (positive Timeform stat on first-time headgear in general), and this one wears cheekpieces again.

Trends & Trainer Notes

Charles Hills (Bob Mali) and Hugo Palmer (Cabelleroso & The Flying Seagull) are both in strong form, with runners performing well this spring.

Kevin Ryan, trainer of Hammer The Hammer, is also flagged as hot by Timeform — a positive for a horse stepping into turf handicaps.

Clive Cox doesn’t have a prior win in this race but is adept at preparing horses fresh.

The draw has been a vital factor in recent renewals: 5 of the last 6 winners were drawn in stalls 1 to 4.

In 2024, Garfield Shadow won this at 20/1 from stall 3; in 2023 and 2022, the winners were drawn in stalls 1 and 4 respectively.

Final Thoughts

Bob Mali has a very appealing profile for this race — drawn low, solid recent form, and a previous course win. Hammer The Hammer is the form standout, but must prove he can replicate it on turf from a wide stall. Diligently and Cabelleroso both return from breaks and are best monitored for market support. Of the outsiders, End of Story and The Flying Seagull are worth keeping an eye on if the betting vibes are strong.

With 14 runners declared, there’s good scope for each-way value — especially in the mid-market cluster.
