17:28 Kempton Park – UNIBET Supports Safer Gambling “Hands and Heels” Apprentice Handicap (Class 5, 0-75), 1m, 4yo+

·

This Class 5 apprentice handicap over 1 mile on Kempton’s Polytrack has attracted a field of ten runners aged four years and older. The going is described as standard to slow, and the pace forecast is even, which typically doesn’t favour extreme hold-up types. The draw bias at this trip over the inner track leans slightly against wide stalls, with mid-to-low draws preferred.

This is a race designed to support developing rider talent, with all horses ridden by claiming apprentice jockeys using only hands and heels (no use of the whip in the finish). It often produces an honest pace and can suit well-positioned horses with course experience.

Strongest Contenders

STRAIGHT A (TFR: 83)
Michael Appleby’s gelding comes into this in consistent form and boasts the highest Timeform rating in the field. A winner on Tapeta earlier in the year, he arrives off the back of a solid second at Leicester and has handled Polytrack previously. Despite being drawn wide in stall 9, he races prominently enough to overcome that and should be involved if repeating recent efforts.

TOP OF THE CLASS (TFR: 82)
This course specialist has won three times over C&D and bounced back to form with a good second behind a progressive winner last time out. She’s drawn ideally in stall 5 and remains competitively weighted. Mark Loughnane’s mare is consistent at this level and her course form is a major plus.

PORT ROAD (TFR: 82)
A lightly-raced four-year-old who was second at Lingfield on his penultimate run before disappointing at Epsom, where he hung left and appeared unsuited by the track. Back on a more conventional surface here and returning to a mile, he remains of interest. Stall 4 is a good draw and the Simon Dow yard is in reasonable form.

Main Dangers

ANGELICA K (TFR: 81)
Another C&D scorer, Angelica K has been in and out of form but has the ability to get involved if things fall right. She’s drawn fairly in 7 and should benefit from a genuinely run race. However, she doesn’t always find much off the bridle and has failed to fire the last twice.

AUTUMN ANGEL (TFR: 81)
Tony Carroll’s mare has form at this track and is another who can pop up when things go her way. Drawn in stall 2, she should get a good tow into the race, though she does tend to need a bit of luck. She was only midfield here last time and will need a stronger finish.

Interesting Outsiders

AGE OF BAROQUE (TFR: 69?)
One of the more intriguing runners in the field despite the low Timeform rating. Trained last season by Charlie Appleby, this well-bred €575,000 Lope De Vega gelding was only seen once for Marco Botti at Meydan in January and has now switched stables again. Off 110 days and in first-time headgear (hood), he has clear potential to progress and is worth monitoring closely in the market.

OMBRECELL (TFR: 81)
Another lightly-raced type who makes his stable debut for Chris Gordon after 205 days off. Formerly with Clive Cox, he wasn’t knocked about on his final start in a Kempton novice and may well do better now handicapping. He’s a half-brother to useful types and shaped as though 1m+ would suit. Watch the betting for support.

Trainer Notes & Historical Trends

  • There is no clear trend trainer with previous wins in this specific race, though it’s notable that Michael Appleby (trainer of Straight A) has a consistent record at Kempton with handicappers.
  • Apprentice races often favour runners with course form and recent sharpness, especially as the hands-and-heels format can expose weaker finishers.
  • Horses with form over the trip and surface, such as Top Of The Class and Angelica K, tend to outperform on the inner track here.
  • Those returning from long breaks (such as Ombrecell and Age of Baroque) are best monitored in the market. Any significant support could be a positive, while heavy late drifts would raise questions.

Summary

Straight A brings the best recent form and top rating into the race, and looks set to go well again despite a tricky draw. Top Of The Class, a multiple C&D winner, is ideally positioned and rates the strongest alternative on known course form. Port Road has scope to bounce back now returned to an artificial surface, while Ombrecell and Age of Baroque are fascinating handicapping newcomers worth keeping an eye on in the betting.

Each-way options exist with ten declared runners, and Angelica K could be one to consider if bouncing back at a track she likes.
