Overview
This 6f handicap for three-year-olds features a modest group of lightly raced and largely exposed types. With a pace setup unlikely to be strong, those with tactical speed and favourable draws could enjoy a significant positional advantage. The strong draw bias towards low numbers at Kempton over this trip should not be underestimated.
Strongest Contenders
CHEEKY STANLEY (TF Rating: 75, Draw 1)
Improved to win a Chelmsford handicap last time, rallying gamely to beat Bust A Moon by a neck. From stall 1, he’s perfectly placed to grab a good early position and, with proven course/surface aptitude and a progressive profile, remains open to improvement on only his fifth start. The form of his win has since been boosted, and his battling attitude will stand him in good stead given the likely tactical nature of this contest.
THURSO (TF Rating: 78, Draw 7)
The highest Timeform-rated runner in the field following a much-improved effort when second at Windsor last time, his first start since a gelding operation. He travelled well and finished off strongly there, but his hold-up style may be a disadvantage here, particularly if the race lacks a strong early tempo. He remains a fair maiden and is on the right trajectory, but tactics will be crucial.
BUST A MOON (TF Rating: 77, Draw 11)
Has been consistent at this level and gave Cheeky Stanley a scare at Chelmsford when narrowly denied. Despite being drawn wide, he has the early pace to potentially overcome that. He also ran with credit at Southwell previously and retains a solid each-way profile. His prominent running style suits the race scenario, and he could be value if the wide draw sees the market underestimate him.
Main Dangers
BALLSGROVE BOY (TF Rating: 76, Draw 3)
Yet to get off the mark but has shaped encouragingly in a few runs and has a handy draw to work from. He wasn’t beaten far in a competitive Chelmsford event and may not be far away again if he can maintain a handy position through the first couple of furlongs.
RAGE OF THUNDER (TF Rating: 72, Draw 2)
Shaped well here over C&D on his reappearance, finishing third behind Distant Rumble while racing awkwardly under pressure. That was a fair return off a break of over 100 days, and he has ideal conditions to go forward here. The low draw boosts his prospects significantly.
Interesting Outsiders
DR ALI (TF Rating: 74, Draw 8)
Consistent enough to be given a second look and holds a fair Timeform rating for the grade. His trainer J. R. Jenkins has a profitable record when sending out single runners at all-weather meetings, and he’s not without a chance if the tempo proves more honest than forecast.
GORGEOUS MR GEORGE (TF Rating: 75, Draw 6)
Still lightly raced and showed some promise earlier this spring. Market support would be significant given connections, especially after a slightly underwhelming run at Yarmouth. One to keep on side if there’s a late move.
Trainers to Note
- Richard Hughes (trainer of Thurso) is a regular winner of three-year-old handicaps at Kempton and has shown a knack for improving young handicappers with gelding ops.
- David Evans has multiple runners (Cheeky Stanley and Apple’s Angel) but is better known for two-year-old sprint success. Cheeky Stanley’s recent win hints he could be on the upgrade.
Significant Trends / Comments
- Horses drawn low (1–3) have a notable edge over 6f at Kempton due to the short run to the first bend.
- Timeform’s Pace Hint flags that front-runners and prominent racers have the advantage here – hold-up types like Thurso may need race circumstances to fall right.
- Those returning from breaks of 60+ days include Rage of Thunder (107 days) and Cheeky Stanley (41 days). Both have strong recent form but any market support after the layoff would reinforce confidence.
Each-Way Angle (11 runners)
With 8+ runners, BUST A MOON and BALLSGROVE BOY offer each-way appeal. Both are closely matched on adjusted figures, race prominently, and have shown solid recent form at similar levels. Their stamina at the trip and running styles should keep them involved.
