13:30 Chester, Friday 9th May 2025CAA Stellar Earl Grosvenor Handicap (Class 2, 7f127y, 4yo+, 0–105)£23,193 to the winner | 15 declared | Turf | Going: Good

·

The opening race on ITV4 from Chester’s Friday card is the competitive Earl Grosvenor Handicap, a Class 2 contest for four-year-olds and upwards over the extended seven furlongs. A field of 15 is set to go to post on ground described as good. The draw bias here remains significant, favouring low numbers over this trip, and the pace forecast is very strong, suggesting that hold-up horses or those with tactical speed from middle-to-low stalls may be best suited.

Strongest Contenders (Timeform Adjusted Ratings & Profile Strength)

TWO TEMPTING (Draw 1) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 117
Returned to form last time out when fourth of 14 at Newbury, showing he retains ability. A five-time winner in 2024, he has proven form at Chester and is ideally drawn in stall 1. Handles a variety of goings and is tactically versatile, which should help in a field expected to go hard early. He’s well treated on his best form.

DIVINE LIBRA (11) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 116
Course winner who shaped well on reappearance when sixth behind Myal at Haydock, running on late. Stays this trip well and handles different types of ground. Not ideally drawn in stall 11, but Ryan Moore is a notable jockey booking. The Timeform pace hint suggests the expected strong pace could favour him over front-runner Yanifer.

GORAK (7) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 115
Returned from six months off with a solid second at Haydock, close behind Myal. Front-runner with strong course credentials and a good record at this trip. Well drawn in stall 7 and wears cheekpieces again. One of the more reliable options, but could be pressured for the lead in this scenario.

CRACKING GOLD (10) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 115
Won at Southwell in March and was below form in a messy race at Newcastle on Good Friday. Can race freely and will need to settle better, but shaped okay in top company before that. Draw 10 isn’t ideal, and he has to prove he can produce his best at Chester, but the form is in place for a big run.

Main Dangers

YANIFER (5) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 114
Course and distance winner, but his usual front-running style may not suit in a race where the pace is expected to be relentless. Timeform notes a negative pace bias against him in favour of Divine Libra. On a fair mark and goes well fresh, but his effectiveness may be compromised by race conditions.

PERSUASION (8) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 114
Won a 9-runner handicap at Musselburgh last time. Well made and tactically adaptable, he tends to travel well through his races. Has form over the trip and ground, and while his Timeform rating is just below the principals, he is running consistently and could be suited by a strong pace.

Interesting Outsiders

CHESHIRE DANCER (6) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 112
Fairly treated and represents a yard in form. His win at Chester last year came off a similar break, and although his last run was 232 days ago, he’s worth a second look if strong in the betting. Carries a light weight and has been placed in big-field handicaps before.

PARTISAN HERO (12) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 112
Has been progressive at a lower level and ran second in a strong pace race at Pontefract last time. Likely to be taken off his feet early but could pick up late pieces if they overdo it up front. However, he is drawn wide in stall 12 and needs luck in running.

TRANSCENDING GLORY (13) | Timeform Adjusted Rating: 116
Not seen for 222 days and has a tough draw. His form last summer was solid, but he may need the run, and market strength would be a positive signal. Was below par on final 2024 outing. First-time-out record worth monitoring.

Trainers to Note

  • Andrew Balding has won the Earl Grosvenor Handicap three times since 2021. His intended runner, NEVER SO BRAVE, is a non-runner.
  • Charlie Fellowes (Gorak) and Charles Hills (Divine Libra) both have strong recent form at the track and send live contenders.

Significant Trends & Timeform Comments

  • Draw bias strongly favours low-numbered stalls over this trip at Chester.
  • Very strong pace expected, which could compromise front-runners such as Yanifer.
  • Timeform’s specific pace hint sides with Divine Libra over Yanifer given likely race shape.
  • Horses returning from a break of 60+ days: Tarkhan, Never So Brave (NR), Kindest Nation, Transcending Glory, Cheshire Dancer, Yermantheremarket support or weakness should be noted carefully.

Summary

This looks a typically tight Chester handicap. Two Tempting is ideally drawn and arrives in form. Divine Libra could be suited by the race shape despite a wide draw, while Gorak looks solid off his Haydock second. From the outsiders, Cheshire Dancer could outrun his odds if ready first time up, and Persuasion remains a consistent each-way player in a field of 15.
