16:10 Chester – Halliwell Jones Handicap (Class 3) 1m2f70y, 4yo+, £15,462, Good ground

·

A competitive 14-runner renewal of the Halliwell Jones Handicap over the extended ten furlongs at Chester, where the draw, race position, and pace shape are all crucial. A strong gallop is expected, which could set this up for a well-run, late closer. Timeform adjusted ratings suggest several closely-matched contenders, but a few profile angles and potential improvers help narrow the field.

Leading Contenders

FOURONEOHFEVER (IRE) – TFR 107 | George Boughey | Billy Loughnane (Draw 3)
Won twice at this course last May, including over C&D, and followed up with a strong Royal Ascot fourth. He shaped as though needing the run at Doncaster on return and should strip much fitter now. Well drawn to race prominently, although the extreme pace forecast may test his stamina late on. Timeform comments suggest he is “primed for another big run at this meeting”.

LIBERTY COACH – TFR 105 | John & Sean Quinn | Jason Hart (Draw 1)
Lightly raced 4yo who improved steadily in 2024 with three wins. He has shown he handles sharp left-handed tracks and won when last seen in October at Redcar. Trainer John Quinn has a good record with improving handicappers, and cheekpieces remain fitted. However, he’s returning from 184 days off – keep an eye on the market for any significant support.

ARCADIAN NIGHTS – TFR 104 | Mark Loughnane | Tom Marquand (Draw 11)
A three-time AW winner earlier this year who has adapted to a more forward style. He ran well again off a higher mark at Lingfield last time and tends to hit in-running lows (Timeform in-play hint noted). He’ll need luck from stall 11 but the setup could play to his strengths if dropped in and delivered late. One to note at a price.

Main Dangers

AUSTRIAN THEORY (IRE) – TFR 106 | Tim Easterby | David Allan (Draw 12)
Shaped well on return at Redcar when second, and the winner has franked the form. He has plenty of experience at this trip and his front-foot style suits Chester, but he’ll need to break sharply from a wide draw. Easterby’s runners tend to come forward for a run, so this one looks a serious player if able to slot in early.

BOX TO BOX (IRE) – TFR 102 | Hugo Palmer | Oisin Murphy (Draw 13)
Course form is a plus and his latest runs abroad can be overlooked given race dynamics. A former winner here and now gets a jockey upgrade with Murphy booked. Stall 13 is a challenge, but he has tactical speed and may be ridden to track across.

DREAM HARDER (IRE) – TFR 103 | Ian Williams | Richard Kingscote (Draw 2)
Another with good Chester form and a proven record at this trip. He was outclassed in the Easter Classic last time but could bounce back at this level. Well drawn and has the right blend of experience and track form, though connections will want to see a return to consistency.

Interesting Outsiders

VALIABAD (FR) – TFR 100 | Owen Burrows | Callum Rodriguez (Draw 14)
Lightly raced since arriving from France and shaped as if in need of the run at Newbury after a long absence. Market signals will be important, but Burrows has a strong record with fresh horses and boasts a £27.69 level-stakes profit with horses returning from breaks. The wide draw is not ideal, but the stable’s early-season strike rate (21%) adds interest.

PARADOXICAL (IRE) – TFR 105 | Jennie Candlish | Warren Fentiman (Draw 9)
Progressive on the AW this winter, racking up four wins. Not seen to best effect on turf latest when racing wide at Lingfield. Handles a strong pace well and may go under the radar given his all-weather profile. First turf win still eludes him, but the tempo of this race might help.

SIEMPRE ARTURO – TFR 100 | Daniel & Claire Kubler | Jim Crowley (Draw 6)
Wasn’t at his best on return at Pontefract, but he improved throughout last year and has won over the trip. Known to be slowly away and held up, he’s another who may benefit if the leaders overdo it. May improve for the run but could need the race again.

Trends and Trainer Notes

No trainer has won this race multiple times in the past five editions.

Chester form is a plus, with multiple previous winners boasting course experience.

Horses returning from 60+ days off include Liberty Coach, Valiabad, Paddy The Squire, and Siempre Arturo – market support will be a key guide to their fitness and intent.

The last five winners were aged 4 or 5, consistent with most of today’s field.

Conclusion

Fouroneohfever looks set for a big run back at his favoured track and is well positioned in stall 3. Liberty Coach and Austrian Theory bring progressive profiles but will need luck from the draw or fitness edge. Arcadian Nights is one to keep on side as an each-way angle given the setup could really suit his late-running style. Valiabad and Paradoxical are the pick of the outsiders, especially if the early pace collapses as expected.
