An open and competitive 11-runner handicap chase over the intermediate trip of just over two miles. The pace is predicted to be even, with a few likely front-runners but no strong burn-up expected, suggesting a fair test that may suit those with tactical speed or who race just behind the leaders. This race has no established historical trend for repeat trainers, and no past winner data is available for the contest, adding to the wide-open feel.

Strongest Contenders

LINDEN ARDEN (TFR 143)
Returned to action with a solid third in novice company at Fairyhouse and now reverts to handicap level off a mark of 130. That form reads well in this context and he’s rated highest on Timeform’s adjusted scale. Stays further than this trip, which could prove an asset in what is forecast to be an evenly-run affair. Acts on good to soft ground and represents a yard in fair form. A hood was tried previously without success and is now left off. Leading contender on recent form and ratings.

CLARENS (TFR 142)
On the up for a yard with a decent record with improving handicappers. Followed up a novice hurdle win with a chase success at Tramore last month where he made all and fended off Enjoy The Dream in determined fashion. Still lightly raced over fences and appears to be thriving. This sharper track is a slight question given he’s unproven beyond 17f, but if ridden with a touch more restraint, he could be dangerous again. Timeform pace hint suggests this setup could suit him well.

ST FAZ (TFR 138)
Consistent and reliable but has become expensive to follow. Has traded short in-running on several occasions but found little late on. Placed on last four starts without converting, and there is a slight suspicion he may lack resolution under pressure. Nevertheless, a capable sort on his day and again figures prominently on adjusted ratings. Could be involved again if delivered late, but perhaps better considered as a place prospect in a double-figure field.

Main Dangers

MACINAMILLION (TFR 130p)
Lightly raced over fences and an interesting handicap debutant for Gavin Cromwell, who boasts a 19% strike rate with such types. Was going notably well when falling at the last in a novice chase at Punchestown, where he looked the likely winner. That effort hinted at more to come and the ‘p’ on his Timeform mark highlights this potential. The 174-day absence means market support or weakness should be watched closely.

ONE LAST TANGO (TFR 137)
Was in fine form earlier this year, notably second to Conyers Hill at Down Royal. However, pulled up at Gowran last time when found to have struck into himself, which may explain the underperformance. Has shown he handles soft ground and stays this trip well, but again, a 61-day break raises questions. Has place claims if bouncing back, and any positive market signs would be noteworthy.

Interesting Outsiders

JACK HOLIDAY (TFR 141)
Now an 11-year-old, but his best form still makes him competitive. Two wins last autumn included a dominant 18-length success at Killarney, although he was pulled up on his last start at Thurles. Best when able to lead or dominate small fields, so tactics and early position may be key. Market support after 160 days off would be significant.

MICA MALPIC (TFR 139?)
Another returning from a lengthy break (529 days) but with decent form from 2023 including a third behind Birchdale in a cross-country event. Stays further but has also run well over this sort of trip. Given the layoff, fitness has to be taken on trust. Trained by Enda Bolger, who is renowned for prepping horses for specific targets, so any support would be revealing.

Trends and Timeform Comments

  • Pace Hint: The projected even gallop is expected to suit Clarens more than Mica Malpic, who may prefer a stronger pace.
  • Timeform Comment on ST FAZ: “Likely to be prominent early but even given how things seem likely to pan out, has been turned over before after trading much lower than Betfair SP.”
  • Significant Trainer Stats: Gavin Cromwell has a solid 19% strike rate with handicap chase debutants – a plus for Macinamillion. David Christie has a 24% strike rate in summer months and saddles Jack Holiday, though this runner arrives with questions to answer after a poor latest run.

Summary

Linden Arden sets the standard on recent form and Timeform ratings, with fitness, tactical speed, and a strong novice third underpinning his claims. Clarens is a notable improver with a likeable attitude and pace suitability, while St Faz brings solid figures but must prove more reliable under pressure. Macinamillion is the potential dark horse on handicap debut and may be one to side with each way if strong in the betting. Keep a close eye on the market for the returning Mica Malpic, Jack Holiday, and One Last Tango, who all have the form to figure if primed.
