Race Conditions

A 0–95 novices’ limited handicap hurdle restricted to conditional jockeys. This is run over just over two miles on good ground, which tends to suit speedier types who travel and jump fluently. The early pace forecast is uncontested, with Pacific the only habitual front-runner.

Strongest Contenders (Timeform adjusted ratings included):

BLUENOSE BELLE (TFR 99+) – Trainer: Richard Phillips | Jockey: Finn Lambert
A lightly raced 7-y-o mare who made a successful handicap debut over hurdles at Fontwell last time out, overcoming a tendency to hang right in the closing stages. That victory came off today’s mark of 81 and has earned just a 2lb rise, suggesting she may still be well treated. Has also had a wind op previously. The Timeform symbol (+) flags further progress. Trainer has a noted profit to £1 level stake when sending a sole runner to a meeting over hurdles.

RUKAANA (TFR 100) – Trainers: Jonjo & A.J. O’Neill | Jockey: Benjamin Macey (8)
Flat-bred gelding who remains lightly raced over hurdles and continues to shape as if there’s more to come. Ran third in a similar race at Hereford in April and showed improved form there. Rider’s 8lb claim is a potential asset. First-time blinkers are applied. Jonjo O’Neill has not won this race previously but is a regular source of handicap debut winners.

GMS PRINCE (TFR 98) – Trainer: Sarah Hollinshead | Jockey: Tabitha Worsley
Reliable 10-y-o who has been holding his form at this level. He finished fifth over course and distance last time, meeting some interference between the last two hurdles. He has undergone breathing operations in the past and typically wears a tongue tie. Not unexposed but consistent in this bracket.

Main Dangers and Others of Note:

PACIFIC (TFR 94) – Trainer: Martin Keighley | Jockey: Freddie Keighley (10)
A confirmed front-runner who was last seen 157 days ago and whose best effort remains a narrow defeat at Stratford last summer. He has shown his best form on good ground and can be dangerous if allowed to dictate. However, he has been beaten in 20% of similar setups when getting an easy lead. Trainer is on a cold run, so market moves should be noted after the layoff.

REMARKABLE FLIGHT (IRE) (TFR 96) – Trainer: Jennie Candlish | Jockey: Lewis Stones
Won a mares’ handicap at Fakenham earlier in the season but disappointed at Sedgefield on final start. She remains unexposed and drops back in trip, which may suit. Not proven beyond two miles and returns from a break (over 60 days), so market signals could be informative.

POPA RICH (IRE) (TFR 94) – Trainer: Jessica Bedi | Jockey: Aaron Anderson
Lightly raced and may have more to offer in time. Was fourth in a junior hurdle at Hexham on latest start. Pedigree suggests staying trips may suit, and while he’s still learning, he’s one of few in this field with physical scope.

Interesting Outsiders:

WOODY’S BOY (IRE) (TFR 88) – Trainer: Mark Walford | Jockey: Alan Doyle
Yet to show meaningful form in four hurdle runs but has a staying pedigree, being closely related to No Hassle Hoff. Might need further in time, but he’s had a wind op and this is his first run from a basement mark in a low-grade conditional event.

THUNDER GAP (TFR 94) – Trainer: Maurice Barnes | Jockey: Charlie Price
Has shown little so far and remains a maiden under both codes, but has had a wind op and is at least experienced. No standout form, but not the worst profile at the foot of the weights in this grade.

Notable Trainer Stats & Trends:

Richard Phillips (Bluenose Belle) and Martin Keighley (Pacific) both show strong profits when sending just one hurdler to a meeting (per Timeform Smart Stats).

This race has produced winners at varied prices, including 13/2, 17/2 and 16/1 in recent years, and tends to favour runners with recent match fitness.

No trainer holds a particularly dominant record in the race’s recent history.

Conclusion:

Bluenose Belle is a logical favourite based on her recent win, and with only a minor rise in the weights, she could follow up if correcting her hanging tendency. Rukaana is less exposed and represents a yard adept at placing handicap types, while GMS Prince is a durable yardstick in this company. Pacific is of interest tactically, especially if able to control the race from the front, but the 157-day layoff and cold yard form are caution flags.

Each-Way Angle (10 runners): Rukaana and Pacific both appeal as value each-way plays if holding a position near the front end.
