Race Conditions:
Open to 4yo+ rated 0–80, with 8 declared runners. The going is Good to Firm (Good in Places). The pace is forecast to be even, which could favour those with tactical speed or a strong turn of foot late on. There is no apparent draw bias over this trip on Ascot’s round course.

Strongest Contenders:
ORCHESTRA (FR) (TFR 90, OR 73) – Fergal O’Brien / Luke Catton
Won over this trip at Kempton 18 days ago, making all. A 3lb rise looks fair considering the runner-up was well clear of the rest. Proven on good to firm, polytrack and heavy ground. Breathing op before the last win seems to have worked. If he gets a similar uncontested lead, he’s a big player.
ROGUE TORNADO (TFR 89, OR 80) – James Owen / Fred Daly (7)
Second to Tides of War at Lingfield last time in a big field; that form has worked out well. Only up 1lb and very versatile regarding going and pace. Smart Stats highlight a 22% strike rate for James Owen over staying trips and £14.91 profit to £1 at Flat meetings with sole runners.
PONCHO (FR) (TFR 88, OR 71) – Gary & Josh Moore / Jack Dace (7)
Placed twice behind Tides of War recently, both at Lingfield, including a third behind Rogue Tornado. Versatile and usually held up, which might work well if they go a proper pace. Has a slight quirkiness (carried head awkwardly), but looks reliable and consistent at this level.

Main Dangers:
TOBY TOPS (TFR 87, OR 62) – Dylan Cunha / Morgan Cole (3)
Dual AW/turf winner this spring before finishing third last time at Thirsk when not ideally placed. Career-best efforts have come from off the pace, and with an even gallop likely, he could be the late player if things fall right. Not dismissed lightly from a workable mark.
GOLDEN FLAME (IRE) (TFR 89, OR 68) – Thomas Faulkner / Jack Doughty
Runner-up last week at Southwell and has a long-standing habit of trading short in-running before fading. Form is solid, but he has been beaten off similar marks before. The even pace might blunt his effectiveness if he’s not allowed to dictate.
—
Interesting Outsiders:
RUSSIAN RUMOUR (IRE) (TFR 87, OR 69) – Jonathan Portman / Olivia Tubb (5)
Has run well fresh and boasts a £68.45 profit to a £1 stake with this trainer off a break. The 196-day absence and wide-margin defeat at Newbury last time make her a watching brief, but she stays well and is proven under a range of conditions.
LITTLE PETER (TFR 87, OR 71) – John Berry / Harry Burns
Won off this mark at Newcastle last year but hasn’t looked in top form recently. Possible bounce-back candidate but needs everything to drop right. May find a few too strong.
LUNAR POWER (IRE) (TFR ?, OR 77) – Donald McCain / Charlie Maggs (3)
Very useful in Ireland but has shown little for new connections and returns from 211 days off following a breathing op. Market likely the best guide.

Trends and Trainer Pointers:
4 of the last 5 winners were aged 4 or 5.
3 of the last 5 winners were favourites or second favourites.
James Owen (Rogue Tornado) has a strong 22% strike rate over 10f+ and positive meeting-specific profit stats.
Jonathan Portman’s record with horses off a break is worth noting (Russian Rumour).

Summary:
ORCHESTRA is a strong contender off a fair mark and looks capable of backing up his Kempton win if allowed to dictate again. ROGUE TORNADO remains well handicapped and is in top form, while PONCHO has run well behind solid yardsticks lately. TOBY TOPS is a lively each-way player now back down in class, and RUSSIAN RUMOUR could surprise if fit.
