18:20 RIPON – TRADITIONAL FAMILY DAY SUNDAY 18th MAY HANDICAP (Class 6)

·

Race Conditions:

1m Handicap | Class 6 | £3,664

3yo only | 0–60 rated

Turf | Good ground

9 runners declared

Pace Forecast: Weak

Strongest Contender:

ZAPPATA (Timeform: 74p) – Carries a 6 lb penalty but comes here chasing a four-timer after wins at Wetherby, Redcar, and Bath, the latter by 1¾ lengths in dominant style. He’s shown versatility on varying ground, and the form of his latest success has already had a boost. George Scott’s gelding is progressive and looks to have more in the locker. The likely weak pace may even suit, given his tactical speed and finishing kick.

Main Dangers:

HILL O RUE (Timeform: 69) – Stepped forward markedly on handicap debut when second to Flamborough Head at Redcar last month, shaping as if there’s more to come. Kevin Ryan’s charge has a workable mark and is relatively unexposed, though he may not have the same momentum as the favourite. Keep an eye on market signals given his relatively short career to date.

FLAMBOROUGH HEAD (Timeform: 69) – Won that Redcar handicap (beating Hill O Rue) and backed it up with a solid fourth in a stronger event at the same venue. Handles fast ground and has a consistent profile for a Tim Easterby runner. Holds place claims again, especially given the stable’s good form.

Interesting Outsiders:

SWEET CICELY (Timeform: 71) – Still a maiden after multiple starts but holding form well, and her mark is workable. The concern here is the pace—she’s typically held up and may find the weak early gallop against her, especially over this trip.

MAVETHEFORCEBEWIVU (Timeform: 61) – Slightly more interesting than the price implies. Ran in a stronger race behind Zappata last time off a long layoff and could strip fitter. Likely to be staying on if they go quicker than forecast.

Others to Note:

NIPPASSO and TREBLE WINNERS return off absences and modest profiles; both need to show more and are best watched unless strong in the betting.

OSELTON has been gelded since his last run and switches stables. First run for Ivan Furtado, who’s not in form—likely needs the run.

EYE ON THE PRIZE looks regressive but hails from a hot yard in Tim Easterby; may outrun odds if any money comes.

Trends and Trainer Notes:

George Scott is in solid recent form with younger handicappers and targets this grade well.

Tim Easterby has trained a previous winner of this race (2023), and saddles two here in Flamborough Head and Eye On The Prize.

Market check advised for any runner absent 60+ days – in this case Nippasso and Eye On The Prize, both off since 2024.

Summary:

ZAPPATA is clear on Timeform adjusted ratings, progressive, and tactically versatile in a race lacking strong pace. He sets a high standard in this 0–60 and may well defy his penalty. HILL O RUE and FLAMBOROUGH HEAD bring recent placed form and profile as the main rivals. Of the rest, SWEET CICELY offers some each-way value if the pace isn’t too muddling, while MAVETHEFORCEBEWIVU is not ruled out as a potential late closer.
