Race Preview – 16:00 Newcastle, Sunday 11 May 2025Michael John Hrycko Handicap (Class 3) | 1m2f42y | 3yo | £17,010 | (0–88) | Standard (AW Tapeta) | 6 runners

Race Conditions & Setup

  • Track: Newcastle (AW Tapeta) – galloping and fair, but stamina and tactical positioning can be key over this extended 10f trip.
  • Pace Forecast: Very Weak – The absence of a habitual front-runner could lead to a falsely run race. With no guaranteed leader, those positioned handily may be favoured.
  • Draw Bias: No strong bias evident over this trip on the round course, though low numbers can sometimes help secure early position in small tactical fields.

Contenders Assessed

GUNSHIP (IRE) (Timeform Rating: 100p)9/10

  • Trainer: James Ferguson | Jockey: Daniel Muscutt
  • Form: 1-2-3 | Days Since Last Run: 16
  • Profile: Closely related to several smart performers including Phoenix of Spain. Lightly raced and improving. Did well to finish third in a steadily run handicap at Sandown last time when caught in traffic, finishing with running left. Won a minor event over C&D prior to that.
  • Tactical Fit: Should be suited by step back up in trip and better placed tactically this time.
  • Note: Trainer yet to win this race but has solid strike rate at the track with improving 3yos.

SWORD OF WESSEX (IRE) (Timeform Rating: 94p)8/10

  • Trainer: Charlie Fellowes | Jockey: Callum Shepherd
  • Form: 2-3 | Days Since Last Run: 20
  • Profile: 350,000Y purchase, by Wootton Bassett. Made promising reappearance when third in a Kempton minor event, his first start since October and first run in cheekpieces. Still learning but should progress with that under his belt.
  • Tactical Fit: Usually held up, which may be a disadvantage given weak pace setup, though potential to improve if more prominently placed.
  • Note: No previous wins in this race for yard, but stable has improved strike rate with 3yo handicappers into May.

CRISTO (Timeform Rating: 99)7/10

  • Trainer: Richard Hannon | Jockey: Joe Leavy (3)
  • Form: 1-1 (last 2 runs) | Days Since Last Run: 3
  • Profile: Strong front-running winner at Chelmsford twice this spring. Up in class but doing it with authority and showing versatility on AW surfaces. Stays 1¼m well.
  • Tactical Fit: May find front-running less effective here if pace collapses. Will need to control fractions or find a tow.
  • Trainer Record: No win in this race but prolific with 3yo handicappers.
  • Market Watch: Short turnaround (3 days); market support would suggest confidence despite penalty.

WAR HAWK (IRE) (Timeform Rating: 97)6/10

  • Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford | Jockey: Harry Davies
  • Form: 1-4 | Days Since Last Run: 32
  • Profile: Won nicely at Lingfield in April; didn’t back it up at Nottingham (turf), but that came just 8 days later. Back on Tapeta now. Can be slowly away, which is a concern in tactical races.
  • Tactical Fit: Will need a better break and likely to sit mid-division, which could be neutralised if race becomes slowly run.
  • Trainer Note: Crisfords have a solid strike rate over 10f+, but no past win in this event.

ONE EYE JACK (IRE) (Timeform Rating: 86)5/10

  • Trainer: Hugo Palmer | Jockey: Tom Eaves
  • Form: 1–0–6 | Days Since Last Run: 185
  • Profile: Won debut at Haydock (good form) but failed to fire in two subsequent outings including in a valuable Longchamp sales race. Returns after gelding and gets first-time cheekpieces. Bred to stay this far.
  • Layoff Warning: First run since October, so fitness is uncertain.
  • Trainer Note: Palmer does have a good record with first-time headgear (Smart Stat: +£30 to £1 level stake). Market support significant.

TILTED KILT (FR) (Timeform Rating: 96)5/10

  • Trainer: William Knight | Jockey: Cieren Fallon
  • Form: 2-5 | Days Since Last Run: 16
  • Profile: Maiden winner at Kempton last season, held his ground in a Sandown handicap behind Fifth Column. More exposed than some of these, and shaping like a borderline 1m performer trying to stretch out.
  • Tactical Fit: Can be ridden prominently; may not find extra up in class.
  • Note: Wearing cheekpieces again; worth watching for market drift.

Trends & Trainer Notes

  • No trainer represented has previously won this race.
  • Recent renewals have generally favoured improving 3yos stepping up to 10f for the first or second time.
  • Timeform often notes upward spikes in horses who shape well in Sandown spring handicaps before returning to AW.

Ratings (out of 10)

HorseRatingComments
Gunship9Unexposed, strong recent effort, tactically better placed today
Sword of Wessex8Remains with potential, one to monitor for late support
Cristo7In-form and likeable type, but faces stiffer test tactically
War Hawk6Capable but risky if breaking slowly again
One Eye Jack5Interesting returnee; worth a market check with cheekpieces/gelding
Tilted Kilt5Fairly exposed; lacks the upside of top three

Summary

This looks a strong opportunity for Gunship, who brings the best mix of ratings, profile and tactical suitability to the race. Sword of Wessex appeals as a potential improver, while Cristo is thriving but may struggle if asked to force the pace again. One Eye Jack is interesting on return with headgear, but fitness and class rise are questions.

Market Watch Advice: Monitor closely for any strong support or notable drifts for One Eye Jack (185 days off), Cristo (quick turnaround), and Sword of Wessex (20 days, second run back). These signals may reveal stable confidence or fitness concerns.
