18:03 Windsor – Fitzdares Restricted Novice Stakes (Class 5)

·

Race Conditions: 1m2f, 3yo–5yo (TWFA: 3yo 9-3, 4yo+ 9-13), 9 runners
Surface: Turf | Going: Good to Firm
Pace Forecast: Very Weak
Draw Bias: Favours Low Numbers

Pace & Draw Insight

Timeform flags this as a very slowly-run race, which is likely to favour those racing handily or with tactical speed, particularly from low draws. There is a distinct bias towards stalls 1–3 historically over this trip at Windsor when the ground is quick. That sets the stage well for Joyful Sound (4) and Quebella (1), both likely to race handy.

Strongest Contenders

Fantasy World (7) – Timeform Adj: 72p – ★ 8/10

Improved notably when third at Windsor last time, shaping with promise behind a useful type. Bred to stay 10f and likely to progress further. Oisin Murphy booked again, and trainer Andrew Balding has won this race in the past (2021 with Zuraig). Big player on form, though not obviously well drawn and may be held up.

Quebella (1) – Adj: 72p – ★ 8/10

Wolverhampton debut winner from a stamina-oriented family. Finished off well that day and looks to relish the step up to 1m2f. Well drawn in stall 1, and a prominent ride from Finley Marsh would suit the likely race tempo. Should improve again.

Joyful Sound (4) – Adj: 74p – ★ 7.5/10

Green on debut, then shaped well when fifth to Previse at Haydock. Comes from a top family (half to Group winners) and likely to be seen to better effect over this trip. Might just have tactical pace to offset a steadily-run race.

Main Dangers

Brise Noir (5) – Adj: 71 – ★ 6.5/10

Returns from a 219-day absence after two decent efforts in France. Ground and trip should suit, and Brian Meehan’s runners are profitable to back off breaks (£80 level stakes profit noted). Needs market support but could be overlooked.

Burj Zabeel (8) – Adj: N/A (debut) – ★ 6/10

Well-bred (by Kingman out of Irish Oaks winner) and makes debut for Charlie Johnston. Likely to want further in time, but the sire’s record on debut is strong (89 debut winners). Draw is not ideal in this small field if racing develops steadily.

Interesting Outsider

Colinski (3) – Adj: 54 – ★ 5.5/10

Fairly bred and not disgraced on turf debut at Leicester. Trainer James Owen has a 21% strike rate over 10f+, so this trip might help. Still rough around the edges but not without potential.

The Rest

HorseDrawAdjRating /10Notes
A Bit Iffy (6)62.5Two poor efforts; unfancied and trainer unexposed.
Mystic Maureen (2)23Shown little so far but well drawn; modest family.
Baby Caitlin (9)92Well beaten both starts, wide stall is a negative.

Trainer Trends

  • Andrew Balding won this in 2021 (Zuraig), and his runner Fantasy World is peaking at the right time.
  • Brian Meehan has strong stats when bringing runners back from breaks. Watch market moves on Brise Noir.

Runners off >90 Day Breaks

  • Brise Noir (219 days) – interesting profile, market watch advised
  • Joyful Sound (last run 16 days ago) – not off a break but one who traded short last time
  • A Bit Iffy & Mystic Maureen – both modest and returning after short absences

Each-Way Possibles (9 runners)

  • Brise Noir – if fit, could outstay some flashier rivals
  • Quebella – won debut, good draw, and unexposed
  • Fantasy World – best form but not ideally drawn for likely tempo
