Pace Forecast: Strong
Draw Bias: Not significant (pace more relevant than draw in this setup)

Pace & Draw Analysis

Prominent racers are usually favoured over this 6f course at York, and a strong pace is anticipated. Horses who race close to the speed—Night Raider, Marshman, and Inisherin—should be well positioned. Hold-up runners like Kerdos could face tactical disadvantages, especially if they get too far behind early.

Strongest Contenders

NIGHT RAIDER (TFR 126) – 9/10
Progressive sprinter with a powerful listed win at Newcastle last autumn, scoring by nearly 4 lengths. Has the pace profile to sit close to what should be an ideal pace scenario. Turf form is still to be proven at this level, but the strength of his AW form and the pace map makes him a major player. Comes off a break (179 days) and has had a breathing operation.

INISHERIN (TFR 124) – 9/10
Last year’s Commonwealth Cup winner, he landed that G1 in style and also bolted up in the Sandy Lane. Ended the year below form but had a wind op since. Ryan Moore booked, and the Kevin Ryan yard is in strong early-season form. Prominent style suits, though he too returns off a 249-day break. Watch market closely.

FLORA OF BERMUDA (TFR 125) – 8/10
Finished third in the Champions Sprint last backend at a big price. That form reads strongly and she’s a previous C&D Group 3 winner (Summer Stakes). Handles fast and soft ground. Has a sharp turn of foot, though may need things to fall right from mid-pack. Trainer Andrew Balding has sent out winners of this race before.

Main Dangers

ELITE STATUS (TFR 122) – 7/10
Dual winner at Newbury last year including the G3 Hackwood Stakes. Flopped in the Champions Sprint on soft and returns from 207 days off. Likely wants faster conditions, which he gets here. Has the ability but needs to prove himself again at this level.

MARSHMAN (TFR 120) – 7/10
Consistent sprinter with recent form on the AW, including Listed success. Well-handicapped on best form, though more exposed than some. Front-runner who’ll be suited by pace but may find a few classier rivals stronger in the finish.

Interesting Outsiders

KERDOS (TFR 120) – 6/10
Temple Stakes winner last year and not disgraced in G1/Group company in France. Has a habit of trading bigger in-running due to hold-up style. Form stacks up but his tendency to be outpaced early could cost him here. Likely to drift in-play again.

ROYAL ZABEEL (TFR 117) – 5/10
Improved on the AW this year with two wins, including Listed success at Wolverhampton. Not ideally placed at Newmarket last time. Handles good ground but likely to find this company a bit hot. Tactics may be key.

RAGE OF BAMBY (TFR 115) – 4/10
Well placed to win a Listed race at Newmarket last season and has strong course form (won here in July). Trainer can ready one fresh, but on balance, others have stronger credentials in a race of this class. Still, she’s a course-and-distance winner and could go better than her price suggests.

Significant Trends

4 of the last 5 winners were 4-year-olds carrying 9-7+

Group-level experience often a prerequisite (5 of last 5 winners had at least 1 win at Group 2/3 level)

Course form important: Flora of Bermuda and Rage of Bamby have previous wins over York 6f

Trainer Kevin Ryan has a strong recent record with sprinters at York and has won this race with Invincible Army (2019)

Timeform Profile Comments (selected)

Night Raider: “Horse in focus” – dominant in Listed company on AW, could be better than a 126-rated performer

Inisherin: “Has had a breathing operation” – big potential if that improves his late-race effort

Flora of Bermuda: “Headway out wide in Champions Sprint” – suggestive of latent class in a messy race

Rage of Bamby: “Horse for course” – lightly flagged but back at the scene of a strong summer win

Runners – Ratings /10 Summary

Inisherin 124 9/10 G1 winner, returns after op, ideal setup
Flora of Bermuda 125 8/10 Solid profile, C&D winner, sharp closing style
Elite Status 122 7/10 Well suited by ground, but needs bounce back
Marshman 120 7/10 Fit and in form, pace angle, slight class question
Kerdos 120 6/10 Top win last year, but vulnerable from rear
Royal Zabeel 117 5/10 On the up AW, but stiff ask turf-side
Rage of Bamby 115 4/10 CD winner, but form well below required level

Each-Way Angle

With 8 runners and a likely strong pace, Flora of Bermuda appeals as a solid each-way candidate given her C&D form, finishing effort, and proven Group-level placing.
