16:18 YORK – BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF WESTOW STAKES (Listed) (1)Conditions: 5f, 3yo only, turf (Good to Firm, Good in places). Nine declared runners.

·

Pace & Draw Angles

Pace forecast is strong, which is common in 3yo Listed sprints. Early speed is well represented. Hold-up horses are historically disadvantaged over York’s quick 5f, especially on good to firm. The draw bias favours low numbers — a factor worth noting given the concentration of prominent racers drawn middle to low.

Strongest Contenders

AESTERIUS (114 TFR) – [Rating: 9/10]
Archie Watson’s colt had an excellent juvenile campaign, winning the G2 Flying Childers and a French Group 3. Finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint despite traffic issues. The form is rock solid, and he typically races prominently which is ideal. Returns off 195 days but Watson’s strike-rate with horses off a break is notable (+£116 to £1 level stake). Solid contender from stall 9.

TROPICAL STORM (112 TFR) – [Rating: 8/10]
Won the Listed Roses Stakes over this C&D last summer. Looked rusty on return in the Palace House, racing off the pace. Will be sharper for that and better suited back at York where he made all last time. Should go forward from stall 1. Trainer Balding is in strong form.

STAR OF MEHMAS (110 TFR) – [Rating: 8/10]
Progressive filly who won three on the bounce last season including a Listed event. Shaped well on reappearance behind a smart type at Chelmsford. Handles quick ground, travels strongly and races on or near the pace. Ryan Moore booked. Stall 3 is a positive.

Main Dangers

MR LIGHTSIDE (111 TFR) – [Rating: 7/10]
Returned with a good second at Chelmsford, sticking to his task well after making the running. Fourth in a hot handicap over C&D last August and holds form with a few of these. Yard won this race in 2023 (Great State). Live each-way shout from stall 2 if holding a prominent position early.

SIR YOSHI (106 TFR) – [Rating: 6/10]
Ran a big race at York in August when third in a 16-runner field. Since that Listed placing he has been consistent if not progressive. Comes from an Irish stable with a strong record when sending solo runners across (+£49 to £1 stake at UK Flat meetings).

Interesting Outsiders

MISS LAMAI (107 TFR) – [Rating: 6/10]
Listed winner last season who shaped with some promise when fifth in France on return. Yard also runs King Of Light but this filly might be the stable’s better chance. Handles the ground and may strip fitter.

KING OF LIGHT (105 TFR) – [Rating: 5/10]
Below form on return in France. York record uninspiring (7th in big-field nursery here last year) but useful at best and likely to be better over 6f. Others preferred at this trip.

CAPTAIN KINSELLA (94 TFR) – [Rating: 4/10]
Two AW wins during the winter but little impact on turf in stronger company. Outclassed here unless he gets a very soft lead, which seems unlikely given the pace on. Drawn 6. John Gallagher’s single runners do pop up occasionally (+£131 at level stake).

Trends and Trainer Watch

Trainer Wins in Race:

Michael Appleby (MR LIGHTSIDE) won the 2023 renewal with Great State.

Andrew Balding (TROPICAL STORM) is currently in strong form.

Archie Watson (AESTERIUS) has a profitable record with horses returning off long breaks.

Winning SP Trends (Last 5 renewals):

4/7f, 13/2, 15/2, 5/1, 3/1 – Favourites or top 3 in market tend to dominate.

Fillies have occasionally gone well but colts have had the upper hand.
