Pace / Draw Analysis

This race is forecast to feature strong pace, with several runners (notably Merchant, Many Men, and Tuscan Star) previously racing prominently or leading. Notably at this trip and on the Knavesmire, hold-up horses often fare better — and Timeform’s note that it’s “generally difficult to get away from hold-up horses at this trip here” reinforces that view.

Draw bias is negligible over this distance on the round course.

Leading Contenders

MERCHANT (William Haggas / Tom Marquand) – Timeform: 110p
Still lightly raced and progressive, Merchant shaped well when third on seasonal return over 10f at Newmarket behind a now-105-rated winner, staying on strongly. He’s bred to stay further and will be better suited by this trip. He’s also got strong trainer stats over middle distances in the spring (24% strike rate with 10f+ horses). Rated 82 but very much unexposed.
Rating: 9/10

ANNIVERSARY (Ralph Beckett / Rossa Ryan) – Timeform: 110p
Runner-up in a warm nursery last October (winner Many Men) and now gelded. Proven over 10f+ on soft, and from a stout family — he looks to relish this trip. Timeform flags him as “horse in focus”, and he’s another expected to progress as a 3yo. Comes here off a 204-day break, so market strength will be informative. Beckett has a strong record in 3yo handicaps at this time of year.
Rating: 8.5/10

RAHIEBB (Roger Varian / Silvestre De Sousa) – Timeform: 99p
Progressive profile; won comfortably at Newcastle in March and caught in the final strides at Haydock over slightly shorter. Looks likely to appreciate further in time. Makes handicap debut off 90 — Varian has a 19% strike rate with such types. Should improve again but has less margin in his mark than some.
Rating: 7.5/10

Main Dangers & Interesting Outsiders

TUSCAN STAR (Andrew Balding / Oisin Murphy) – Timeform: 103p
Progressed well on the AW over the winter, not seen to best effect latest when third off a slow gallop. That was a four-runner race and he now returns to turf and a strongly-run race. Needs to prove himself back on grass but remains with upside off 84.
Rating: 7/10

PANTILE WARRIOR (Gosdens / Ryan Moore) – Timeform: 97
Won impressively on reappearance but faded badly behind Many Men next time when racing too freely. That effort might be best forgiven. Tongue tie now added. Still early days and the yard is in hot form.
Rating: 6.5/10

MANY MEN (Jim Boyle / Jack Doughty) – Timeform: 107
Two turf wins at 10f, and ran creditably in a deeper Sandown contest last time when fifth, staying on late. Shapes as though this longer trip will suit, but his mark now demands more and he faces several more progressive rivals.
Rating: 6.5/10

LAST GALILEO (K. R. Burke / Shane Foley) – Timeform: 98
Won a minor Ayr event last backend but well held in a Newmarket Listed event this spring. Strongly bred but looks to need more time, and hasn’t yet shown the necessary level to be competitive off 82.
Rating: 5.5/10

NOVELISTA (Charlie Johnston / Joe Fanning) – Timeform: 100
Returns from 199 days off and makes handicap debut off 75. His 2yo Redcar third was encouraging (briefly hampered), and he’s bred to improve for this trip. First start of the season, so the market will tell us more, but he’s well-treated if fully tuned up.
Rating: 6/10

Trends & Trainer Notes

Charlie Johnston, Ralph Beckett, and William Haggas have all trained winners of this age/handicap bracket at this meeting in recent years.

Past winners (e.g. Chesspiece, Al Qareem, Kondo Isami) were typically rated 90+ and won this race as seasonal improvers over 1m4f.

Strong gallop and improving 3yo profile are both key features among recent winners.

Each-Way Angle

There are 8 runners, so place terms apply. Tuscan Star and Rahiebb both appeal as each-way candidates — particularly if support comes for either close to the off.

Market Advice

Keep a close eye on Merchant, Anniversary, and Novelista for late support or drifts, especially as two are returning from 90+ day layoffs (Anniversary and Novelista). Any significant market strength would be a positive.
