20:12 Bath – Blackmore Building and Design Handicap

·

Wednesday, 14 May 2025 | Class 6 | 1m2f37y | 3yo | 0–55 | 12 runners | Going: Firm

Race Conditions and Pace/Draw Angles

  • Going: Firm. Bath typically rides quick on this ground and with the undulations, it can favour those racing handily or prominently.
  • Pace forecast: Even, with likely pace coming from the likes of Mighty Real, Buck Barrow, and Respiro Solitario.
  • Pace bias at this trip on firm: Historically, Bath over 10f on quick ground favours those racing up with the pace. Hold-up horses tend to struggle to make up ground, which may work against Penn Avenue, who races off the speed.
  • Draw: No significant draw bias is evident over this trip at Bath, particularly with a field of 12.

Strongest Contenders

Penn Avenue (Draw 6, Daniel & Claire Kubler) – TFR 68p – Rating: 8/10
Took a big step forward on her first handicap start at Wetherby, splitting subsequent winners and only up 1 lb. She shaped as if this longer trip would suit. Strong Timeform symbol (p) denotes potential for further improvement, and her pedigree supports progression. One of the more likely winners if handling quicker ground.

Respiro Solitario (Draw 4, Muir & Grassick) – TFR 67 – Rating: 7.5/10
Finished third behind Penn Avenue at Wetherby and also open to further progress. Has experience on quick ground and sits well tactically for today’s likely pace profile. The stable has a good record when stepping horses up in trip.

Battle Stride (Draw 8, Michael Bell) – TFR 63+ – Rating: 7/10
Gelded prior to return, shaped well at Wolverhampton when third. Was backed as favourite and shaped as though the return to turf and firmer ground would suit. Open to improvement and trainer is in strong form.

Main Dangers and Interesting Outsiders

Perfect Parole (Draw 12, Tom Ward) – TFR 63 – Rating: 6.5/10
Won off 49 at Wolverhampton in February and wasn’t disgraced at Lingfield last time. Carries her head awkwardly and needs to prove she handles turf and firm ground, but has solid numbers for this grade.

Ottoman (Draw 5, Greenall & Guerriero) – TFR 58 – Rating: 6/10
Returned to turf with a better effort in early April before a lesser run last time. May be suited by the step back up in trip. Not dismissed in this grade, though the latest effort tempers confidence.

Aroof (Draw 10, Mark Loughnane) – TFR 59 – Rating: 5.5/10
Has bits of form at Wolverhampton and Kempton but looked awkward under pressure last time. Still relatively lightly raced but needs to settle better and translate form to turf.

Mighty Real (Draw 1, Hughie Morrison) – TFR 63+ – Rating: 5.5/10
Returns after nearly a year off and has since been gelded. Showed very little in three quick runs at sprint trips, but steps up markedly in trip and has a stamina pedigree. Market should be watched closely on stable debut.

Others

  • Buck Barrow – TFR 60 – Rating: 5/10
Well held in Ireland and didn’t show much for new connections last time. Potentially better suited to shorter trips.
  • Baileys Value – TFR 56 – Rating: 4.5/10
Minor place form at best. Drawn wide and doesn’t look well enough treated to win at present.
  • Pomme Pomme – TFR 52 – Rating: 4.5/10
Still uncompetitive in three maidens and needs to show more in handicaps.
  • In The Sunshine – TFR 48 – Rating: 4/10
Headgear now tried but little encouragement from the yard switch or handicap debut.
  • It’s Life – TFR 55 – Rating: 3.5/10
Beaten long way in both handicaps. Hard to fancy.

Trends and Trainer Notes

  • No trainer has a clear repeat record in this specific race, though Michael Bell and Hughie Morrison both have strong overall Bath records with younger handicappers.
  • William Muir & Chris Grassick show a positive profit return when stepping horses up in trip, which applies to Respiro Solitario here.
  • Timeform’s comment identifies Penn Avenue as a standout, with Respiro Solitario the main threat.

Note: This field of 12 does offer each-way betting terms. The most appealing each-way options based on profile, current rating trajectory, and race setup would be Respiro Solitario and Battle Stride, with Mighty Real worth monitoring for significant market support after a long absence.
