Pace/Draw Angle:

The pace is expected to be strong, which could compromise horses that race in rear or need to settle. Historically at this trip at Clonmel, prominent racers tend to fare better, giving a boost to the chances of runners like Fascinating Shadow who is usually positioned closer to the pace. On the other hand, Expound may struggle if forced too far back.

Strongest Contenders:

  • GLENASHLING (TF adj 118) – Solid mark and lightly raced for the grade. Beat a decent sort (though promoted) in March and wasn’t disgraced last time at Ballinrobe behind a subsequent improver. Related to Special Tiara, which might bring some upside. On a fair mark (OR 122) and likely to benefit from the good ground. Rating: 7.5/10
  • EXPOUND (TF adj 108, Flat winner last week) – Comes here off a Ballinrobe Flat win and is clearly in form, though his latest hurdles run was less convincing. Susceptible to a pace collapse but if he’s ridden handier and settles, he should go close. Trainer Denis Hogan is 3/21 in Irish handicaps in the last fortnight. Rating: 7/10
  • FASCINATING SHADOW (TF adj 126+) – Best Timeform adjusted hurdles rating in the field and shaped well at Ballinrobe earlier in the campaign. He’s consistent on the Flat, stays well, and should be suited by the strong pace. Big player if he reproduces his best over hurdles. Rating: 8/10

Main Dangers:

  • MISS GHERKIN (TF adj 126) – On a workable mark and showed ability last winter, including a good fifth at Thurles. Not without her quirks and consistency is an issue, but she’s one of the better weighted mares here. The 81-day layoff means the market is worth watching. Rating: 6.5/10
  • KIMY (TF adj 131) – Capable on her day, as shown in a good second at Leopardstown in March. The latest run ended at the first (unseated), so hard to gauge current form. Drop in class is a plus. Rating: 6.5/10

Interesting Outsiders:

  • BAYRANN (TF adj 112) – Won at Thurles but his Punchestown run was too keen. If he settles better here, not discounted. Has potential to outrun odds if given a more restrained ride. Rating: 6/10
  • BALLYCASHIN (TF adj 119) – Winner at this track and represents Anthony Mullins, who has placed runners in this race previously. Not the strongest profile, but the return to Clonmel is interesting. Rating: 6/10
  • MOUNTAIN PORT (TF adj 92) – Surprise winner at Tramore last season but looks out of depth on recent evidence. Rating: 4/10
  • MOUNT FRISCO (TF adj 105) – Out of form over both codes and looks regressive. Hard to fancy despite ability shown in the past. Rating: 4/10

Noteworthy Trends:

  • This race has thrown up winners for a range of small Irish yards in recent seasons (Rothwell, Elliott, Callaghan, Doyle), with 7–9yo horses generally faring best.
  • Jockey claimers have been well used by winning trainers in past editions, although none of the bigger yards are strongly represented here.
  • Horses switching back from the Flat or coming off strong placed efforts over timber tend to perform better than chase-to-hurdle switchers.

Each-Way Angle (9 runners):

Each-way players could do worse than Kimy or Miss Gherkin – both mares are on competitive marks, have past ratings to figure, and will be suited by a strong pace collapse scenario.
