Pace & Draw Angles

  • Pace forecast: Very Weak. There is no clear front-runner, and the likely slow gallop could affect those held up, notably Alsakib, while suiting more adaptable types such as Rebel’s Romance.
  • Draw bias: Not applicable in a 5-runner long-distance race on a wide straight track.

Strongest Contenders

REBEL’S ROMANCE (TFR 131 | Timeform Adj: 125) – 9/10
Charlie Appleby’s globe-trotting gelding comes here off a respectable run in the Dubai Sheema Classic, despite not being at his very best. A proven Group 1 performer, he won four major international races in 2024 including the Breeders’ Cup Turf. With fitness assured from a February prep, versatile ground handling, and no pace reliance, he is the one to beat. Appleby also has an excellent 27% strike rate with stayers.

SWEET WILLIAM (TFR 128 | Adj: 128) – 8/10
Runner-up to Kyprios in the Long Distance Cup, this headstrong gelding boasts stamina in abundance, with wins in the Doncaster Cup and Henry II Stakes last year. Absent since October, so market support will be instructive (209-day layoff). Trainer John & Thady Gosden have won this twice since 2019, including with Stradivarius. Has his quirks but thrives at this trip.

CONTINUOUS (TFR 124 | Adj: 120) – 7/10
The 2023 St Leger winner hasn’t quite returned to that level since, though he did land a Group 3 in Ireland last summer. His Meydan run (ninth in the Dubai Gold Cup) can be forgiven given the unsuitably slow gallop. Blinkers are applied for the first time – a possible spark. Ryan Moore stays loyal.

Main Dangers

EPIC POET (TFR 126 | Adj: 126) – 7/10
Fit from three solid efforts at Meydan, including a creditable third to Dubai Future in the Gold Cup. Proven at 2m, he’s consistent and durable. The one question is whether he has the class of the top two, but he’s earned his place.

Interesting Outsider

ALSAKIB (TFR 126 | Adj: 92) – 5/10
Won the Silver Cup over this course last year but was tailed off on soft ground in the Long Distance Cup. Gelded over the winter and returns from a 209-day break. Drawn in 1, he may find the lack of early pace a problem given his preference for a true gallop. Hard to recommend unless notably supported in the market.

Trends & Trainer Notes

  • John & Thady Gosden have won this race twice in the last six renewals (Stradivarius 2019, 2022).
  • Charlie Appleby’s record with 10f+ horses (27%) and early-season runners (28%) is notably strong.
  • The last two renewals were won by Marco Botti’s Giavellotto, who does not run this year.
  • Horses returning off breaks of over 180 days must be monitored for market signs (Sweet William, Alsakib).

Final Notes
This is a small but classy field, and Rebel’s Romance sets a high bar. Sweet William is a strong stayer but must overcome a lengthy break, while Continuous is capable but inconsistent. Epic Poet is solid and fit, and not far off on ratings. Alsakib looks held unless the pace unexpectedly collapses.

Market clues will be vital for the two longest layoffs. This is a race where tactical position and fitness may trump raw ability.
