·

Race Conditions

Race: Highclere Castle Gin Carnarvon Stakes (Listed)

Time: 13:25

Course: Newbury

Distance: 6f

Class: 1 (Listed)

Surface: Turf

Going: Good (Good to Firm in places)

Runners: 11

Pace Forecast: Very Strong

Draw Bias: Against high numbers – low-to-middle looks more favourable

Past Winners: Recent scorers include Shaquille (2023) and Creative Force (2021), both future Group winners

Pace/Draw Analysis

With multiple pace-forcers (e.g. Ides of March, Sayidah Dariyan, Hold A Dream), this could set up for a closer from a middle stall.

Symbol of Honour and Berkshire Whisper could benefit most if the leaders burn each other out.

High-drawn Hold A Dream (stall 10) and Sayidah Dariyan (11) might be at a disadvantage under pressure late.

Strongest Contenders

1. IDES OF MARCH (121p) – 9/10

Group 3 winner (Round Tower Stakes) at the Curragh last year.

Beaten only narrowly on reappearance in a listed race at Navan (soft), shaping as though still improving.

Ryan Moore rides (38% strike rate on favs) and Aidan O’Brien has him primed.

Strong pace may not suit his forward-going style, but he’s the form horse.

2. SYMBOL OF HONOUR (117) – 8/10

Charlie Appleby-trained and already a dual Meydan winner in 2025.

Disappointed last time in listed company, but the early pace collapse could play to his strengths.

Buick stays loyal; the yard has a 28% strike rate with sprinters.

3. SAYIDAH DARIYAN (118) – 8/10

Wide-margin maiden winner and followed up in a minor Chelmsford event.

Drawn wide but has tactical speed.

Improvement needed for listed success, but upward trajectory is intact.

Main Dangers

4. BERKSHIRE WHISPER (112p) – 7.5/10

Progressive type who completed a hat-trick on the AW, including on All-Weather Finals Day.

Trained by Andrew Balding (in form) and ridden by Oisin Murphy (20% strike rate at Newbury).

First run on turf in 2025 – interesting angle.

5. HOLD A DREAM (116) – 7/10

Big improver last time when second in listed company at Chelmsford.

Drawn wide (stall 10) and might be caught out in a race with early burn.

Rossa Ryan retains the ride.

6. NOBLE CHAMPION (109) – 6.5/10

High-priced juvenile who has shown ability without putting it all together yet.

Third at Goodwood last time, fair effort; could be one to step forward in a well-run race.

Interesting Outsiders

7. STRONG WARRIOR (104p) – 6/10

Unbeaten in two small-field events, latest a narrow win at Pontefract.

Faces far tougher opposition but could go forward and test them early.

8. CABURN (108) – 5.5/10

Won the Super Sprint at Newbury last year but struggled in higher grades late season.

247 days off; market check needed to gauge readiness.

9. DEFENCE MINISTER (105) – 5.5/10

Took two novice events before flopping in the Middle Park.

Been off since and stable doesn’t have high-profile stakes runners often.

10. ANDESITE (108) – 5/10

Was a game maiden winner at York in 2024, but looked free and undercooked on return.

Faces stiffer opposition and may not get the run of things.

11. RIGHTHERE RIGHTNOW (107) – 4/10

Won a novice on debut but tailed off last time and hard to recommend in this field.

Market Watch

Caburn, Defence Minister, and Righthere Rightnow return from 200+ day layoffs – monitor closely for any late market activity.

Berkshire Whisper’s turf debut in 2025 may offer value if support arrives late.
