17:15 CARTMEL – CARER SUPPORT SOUTH LAKES HANDICAP CHASE (Class 3, 2m5f34y, 0–130, £6,918, 5yo+)Going: Good to Soft (Good in places) | Runners: 6

·

Pace Forecast: Weak – steady pace anticipated, which may favour those who race handily.
Pace Angle: Prominent racers like CAPTAIN IVAN should be advantaged over typical hold-up types such as REXEM.
Track Note: Cartmel often rewards bold jumping and front-running tactics given its tight bends and short run-in.

1. Strongest Contenders

CAPTAIN IVAN (TFR 141) – Has bounced back to form with cheekpieces reapplied, winning well at both Market Rasen and Haydock this spring. Prominent racer with solid form over this sort of trip. The likely pace setup suits him ideally. Still well treated off 112.

SPYGLASS HILL (TFR 132x) – Talented but erratic 12yo. Finished a solid second at Newton Abbot latest despite being ignored in the market. Prone to mistakes but will be dangerous if completing cleanly. James Bowen a positive jockey booking.

2. Main Dangers

CHARLIE UBERALLES (TFR 138) – A course winner earlier in the season and has decent midwinter form. Pulled up in two stronger contests at Aintree and Kempton but now drops back into calmer waters. Dianne Sayer has a 25% summer strike rate, and Cartmel form is a bonus.

HIGH MOON (TFR 137) – Consistent but not winning. Finished tailed off last time, though prior form includes solid placed efforts. The stable is in fair order and the booking of Brian Hughes is a clear positive.

3. Interesting Outsiders

REXEM (TFR 133?) – Needs to prove he retains ability after a long absence. Timeform notes trainer John McConnell is cold, and the Perth reappearance was uninspiring. May improve with fitness but pace setup and profile look against him.

DALYOTIN (TFR ?) – Not seen in nearly two years and was pulled up in a French claimer when last seen. Hard to gauge where he stands now. Trainer Rebecca Menzies also runs HIGH MOON, and market moves will be telling.

4. Trends & Trainer Notes

Previous winners of this race have often been aged 8 or older and carried 11st+.

Rebecca Menzies and Dianne Sayer have runners here with past Cartmel success.

In-form veterans and recent winners have typically dominated this race type in small fields at Cartmel.

5. Runner Ratings (out of 10)

Horse Rating

Captain Ivan 8.5/10
Spyglass Hill 7.5/10
Charlie Uberalles 7/10
High Moon 6.5/10
Rexem 5/10
Dalyotin 4/10

Note: Keep an eye on market confidence in REXEM (32 days off) and DALYOTIN (706 days off). Significant support or drifts will be highly informative. Veterans returning to form after breaks can spring surprises, but recent evidence is weak.

6. Each-Way Angle

Not applicable – only 6 runners declared.

7. Tissue Estimate (100%)

Captain Ivan – 9/4

Spyglass Hill – 11/4

Charlie Uberalles – 5/1

High Moon – 6/1

Rexem – 9/1

Dalyotin – 12/1

Summary:
This looks a good opportunity for CAPTAIN IVAN to follow up under ideal conditions. SPYGLASS HILL has the raw ability to win if his jumping holds up, while CHARLIE UBERALLES could be a factor back at Cartmel if putting a line through his last two. The others have questions to answer on fitness or form.
