19:35 STAR SPORTS BRIGADIER GERARD STAKES (Group 3)

·

1. Race Title and Conditions

19:35 Sandown – Star Sports Brigadier Gerard Stakes (Group 3), Class 1, 1m1f209y, 4yo+, £45,368 to the winner
Going: Good (Good to Firm in places)
Field: 10 runners
Pace Forecast: Even
Pace/Draw Note: Hold-up types may be inconvenienced if the tempo isn’t strongly run. The profile of Cicero’s Gift, who tends to be ridden patiently, could be at a positional disadvantage compared to Military Order, who can sit closer.

2. Contenders, Dangers, Outsiders & Key Profile Notes

Leading Contenders

Almaqam – Strong comeback third in the Gordon Richards Stakes over course and distance; progressive profile with more to come at 1¼m. Stays well, acts on soft, and trainer Ed Walker is in form.

Ombudsman – Unbeaten in four runs last season, capped by Group 3 success in France. Hasn’t been seen since September but is clearly talented. John & Thady Gosden have a strong record with returning 4yos.

Military Order – Returned from a 13-month layoff to win convincingly on the AW. Has form with cut, stays well, and Buick’s pick from the Appleby pair suggests confidence.

Main Dangers

Ancient Wisdom – Beaten narrowly by Al Aasy at this venue last time. Has form over further and appears better with some give, but class is not in doubt.

Enfjaar – Smart handicapper last year and shaped with promise when just behind Persica at Ayr. Lacks a recent run (250 days off), but capable at this level.

Interesting Outsiders

Bolster – Won four times last season, including a listed race. Likely to lead. Better with ease but not disgraced at Chester recently.

Cicero’s Gift – Tends to finish strongly from off the pace and could be disadvantaged by how the race sets up. Likely to need luck in running.

Persica – Won the Earl of Sefton before well held in the Lockinge. Clearly not easy to predict but has the class if on a going day.

Hold-up/Needs Luck Types

Cicero’s Gift and Enfjaar both typically need to be delivered late and could find things going against them if the tempo is even rather than strong.

Trainers with Previous Winners

Charlie Appleby (Military Order, Ancient Wisdom) has a 30% strike rate in races over this trip.

Roger Varian (Enfjaar) and Gosden (Ombudsman) also have notable strike rates at Sandown.

3. Runner Ratings out of 10

Horse Trainer Rating (/10) Notes

Almaqam Ed Walker 9 Strong C&D return, progressive
Ombudsman Gosden 8.5 Unbeaten, needs to prove himself after 263 days
Military Order Appleby 8.5 Good return, Appleby’s pick, solid profile
Ancient Wisdom Appleby 8 Respected, stays well, softer ground ideal
Enfjaar Varian 7.5 Layoff to overcome, talented
Bolster Burke 7 Will go forward, better with cut
Persica Hannon 6.5 Hard to trust, can bounce back
Cicero’s Gift Hills 6 Well held up type, not best suited by setup
Phantom Flight George Scott 5 Below form in 2025 so far
Aafoor Al Attiyah 3 Outclassed at this level

> Note: Military Order, Enfjaar, and Ombudsman are all returning from layoffs of 90+ days – monitor for significant drifts or support.

4. Each-Way Angles

With 10 runners declared, each-way terms (1/5 odds 3 places) apply.

Almaqam looks a solid each-way foundation.

Enfjaar offers place value if fit.

Bolster could outrun odds if he gets his own way up front.

Based on ratings, profiles, fitness, and trainer trends:

Almaqam – 3/1

Ombudsman – 4/1

Military Order – 9/2

Ancient Wisdom – 8/1

Enfjaar – 10/1

Cicero’s Gift – 16/1
