Pace Forecast: Even
Draw Bias: Favours high draws
—
1. Race Setup and Pace/Draw Angles
This is a well-contested 1-mile handicap for older horses rated 0–95. The pace forecast is even, and high draws are historically favoured over this round mile at Sandown. A prominent or stalking position near the rail tends to be advantageous, particularly with a field of this size.
The likes of Crack Shot, Whip Cracker, and Smart Hero should be well placed if adopting positive tactics. Conversely, Arkhalia Flynn, Atlantic Gamble, and I Still Have Faith are often dropped out and may need luck in running.

2. Contenders, Dangers, Outsiders and Notable Trends
Strongest Contenders:
HICKORY (Adjusted Rating 108): Scored a narrow success in a big-field Victoria Cup on return from seven months off, and has form in strong handicaps. Goes well fresh, adaptable tactically, and stays the trip well. Should be competitive again with the strong pace likely to suit his style.
GOLDEN OCEAN (108p): Lightly raced and unbeaten in handicaps. Formerly trained in Ireland and now with David Menuisier, who does well with new recruits. Won a pair of 1m races at Navan last autumn and shaped as if more to come. From a high-class French pedigree and drawn in stall 1, which is not ideal, but Oisin Murphy may be able to navigate it.
SURREY SHADOW (109p): Eye-catching in the Spring Mile at Doncaster when keeping on well after meeting trouble. Progressive profile and represents an in-form yard in Tom Clover. Likely to improve again and drawn well to attack or stalk. Slight concern is that he can start slowly.
Main Dangers:
CRACK SHOT (113): Reportedly lost his action last time, so that run is best ignored. Prior to that, shaped well at Kempton and looks well treated if recapturing his best form. Well drawn and will be near the pace. Worth watching in the market as he’s still relatively unexposed for the Kubler yard.
WHIP CRACKER (112): Ryan Moore booked, and this gelding had a quiet trip last time at Thirsk where he was caught out of position. Has been competitive in decent AW and turf handicaps, and may well appreciate Sandown’s climb. Trainer Richard Hughes in form.
ALPHA CRUCIS (107): Ran with credit in the Lincoln on return. Solid backform at Goodwood last year and handles various ground types. Could get a good tow into the race from his midfield draw.
Interesting Outsiders:
ARKHALIA FLYNN (111): Progressive last year and shaped well when fifth behind Alpha Crucis last autumn. Trainer Jack Channon has an excellent strike rate with single runners at flat meetings. Will likely be ridden cold, so will need the gaps to appear.
SIERRA BLANCA (108): Best form is on softer ground, and although off for 223 days, has ability. Often slowly away, which might blunt his chance at this track unless there’s a collapse in pace. Could run into a place if they go hard.
Trends and Trainer Notes:
No repeat winners among trainers in recent years, but both David Menuisier and Tom Clover show strong levels of profit with lightly raced or progressive types.
Jack Channon (+£42 to level stakes when sending one runner) and B.F. Brookhouse (+£26.97 in same angle) also warrant respect.
Horses returning from layoffs over 90 days: Golden Ocean (232d), Hafeet Alain (176d), Sierra Blanca (223d), I Still Have Faith (313d), Miletus (341d) — market support or drift will be informative.

4. Each-Way Angles
With 13 runners, each-way terms apply.
Arkhalia Flynn, Whip Cracker, and Crack Shot make the most appeal at longer prices with form that suggests they can be in the mix under suitable conditions. Sierra Blanca also offers some interest, though would prefer more cut.
