19:08 Down Royal – His Majesty’s Plate (Listed), 2m, 4yo+, Good (Good to Yielding in places)

·

Race Conditions and Setup
This is a Listed contest over 2 miles on turf at Down Royal, open to four-year-olds and up. The going is good, leaning slightly toward yielding in places. The pace forecast is even, with a few habitual front-runners declared. There’s no draw bias noted here given the nature of the trip.

With Poetic Sound and Dallas Star likely to press on, and several midfield-to-held-up types among the field, those racing prominently may hold an advantage unless the ground softens or early fractions are overdone.

Contenders, Dangers, and Profiles

Strongest Contenders:

Poetic Sound (116) – Progressive, tactically versatile, and trained by in-form Ger Lyons. Ran third to Kyprios last time, showing stamina and tactical pace. Likely to be on or near the lead. Remains open to further progress over this longer trip.

Dallas Star (113) – Ran very close to Kyprios last time, though possibly flattered. Still lightly raced, has run to high marks, and stays well. Prominent style a plus here. Adrian Murray’s yard continues in decent nick.

Goodie Two Shoes (111) – Made all to land a Listed race last time and arrives in good heart for Joseph O’Brien. Stays well and is suited by conditions. More exposed than others but clearly capable.

Main Dangers:

La Isla Mujeres (114) – Lightly raced mare from Paddy Twomey’s red-hot yard. Won a Roscommon listed race last summer but has been off 287 days. May need the run, though market support would be noteworthy.

Samui (118) – Dual-purpose gelding who’s smart at best and ran solidly in a Punchestown hurdle last time. Flat form stacks up too, but often held up and may need things to fall just right.

Taipan (112) – Back in form at Gowran last time after a spell over hurdles and a quiet backend to 2024. More to come, though he has been inconsistent.

Interesting Outsiders:

Duraji (110?) – Weld-trained 4yo who may yet build on maiden promise. Mixed efforts in pattern company but bred to stay well and improve with age. Watch the market – stable has a history of placing horses shrewdly in races like this.

Cristal Clere (113) – Strong form in 2024, including second in a Chester Listed race. Stays middle distances well and had a solid reappearance. Others may have more upside, but he’s tough and reliable.

Others:

Royal Entry (101) – Maiden winner from the Twomey yard. Steady improver but this is a big step up. May need further development before featuring in Listed company.

Shanroe (108+) – Exposed veteran with old form that could feature but arrives out of sorts and was pulled up over hurdles last time. Tends to be held up and needs a revival.

Trainers to Note:

Paddy Twomey (La Isla Mujeres, Royal Entry) has a strong 31% strike rate with horses over 10f+ and a good record with runners off breaks.

Joseph O’Brien and Ger Lyons both arrive with yards in form.

No single trainer has dominated this race in recent years.

Hold-up Risk Notes: Samui, Shanroe, and Cristal Clere all tend to be played late and will require gaps and luck in running. With a relatively small field and even pace, it may suit those ridden handily.

Runner Ratings (out of 10):

Poetic Sound – 9

Dallas Star – 8.5

Goodie Two Shoes – 8

La Isla Mujeres – 7.5 (fitness query)

Samui – 7.5

Duraji – 7 (potential improver)

Taipan – 7

Cristal Clere – 6.5

Royal Entry – 5.5 (likely outclassed at this stage)

Shanroe – 4 (major doubts on current form)

Keep an eye on the market for any significant support or drift, especially for La Isla Mujeres (287 days off), Royal Entry (quick return), and Duraji (back from German run).

Each-Way Angles (10 runners)
With 10 declared, each-way terms apply. Dallas Star and La Isla Mujeres look viable each-way plays at a price if the market holds up.

Dallas Star – 9/2

Goodie Two Shoes – 5/1

La Isla Mujeres – 6/1

Samui – 13/2

Taipan – 10/1
