13:13 Haydock, Saturday 31 May 2025BETFRED ‘PLAY FRED’S £5 MILLION’ HANDICAP (Class 2, 1m3f175y, 4yo+, 0–105, £23,193)

·

Going: Good to Soft (Good in places) | 16 declared runners
Pace Forecast: Very Strong
Draw Bias: Against High

1. Pace & Draw Angles

With a very strong pace forecast and multiple habitual front-runners (Prydwen, Steel Tiger, Shader, King’s Code), this race sets up well for patiently-ridden types with stamina. High draws may be disadvantaged, particularly if the field tracks centre to stands side on easier ground.

2. Strongest Contenders & Dangers

SHADER (TFR 111p) – Lightly raced 4yo from the Gosdens. Unexposed at this trip, winning two AW novice events impressively last autumn. Gelded and now makes his handicap debut. Buick booked. Yard in top form. Will need to settle better if he’s to handle a likely strong gallop, but remains open to stacks of progress.

STRESSFREE (TFR 115) – Career-best second in a strong York handicap latest, keeping on strongly. Stays the trip well and handles most ground. Hasn’t been over-raced and should be suited by a solid pace.

STEEL TIGER (TFR 115) – Progressive in AW handicaps and almost landed a three-timer at Newcastle last time. Carries momentum and showed he can lie up off strong fractions. Conditions should suit and looks one of the most straightforward types.

FOX JOURNEY (TFR 118) – Talented but fragile. Wide-margin Newmarket winner last summer and placed in a slowly-run contest on final start. Goes well fresh and debuts for Kevin Ryan after 280 days. Capable if fully fit.

CHILLINGHAM (TFR 117) – Capable of running big races at this level when on song. Poor return at Musselburgh but shaped like he needed the run. The visor replaces cheekpieces and the pace scenario suits his hold-up style.

NAQEEB (TFR 116) – Back from a break with a promising midfield effort at York. Can be keen and needs cover, but has talent and wasn’t knocked about. Could easily step forward again with a more relaxed run.

ALBANY (TFR 112) – Gelded and lightly raced. Easy winner on return last autumn and ran below expectations in a Chantilly listed race after. If the ground softens, he may improve for it. Trainer has a strong record with this profile.

KILDARE LEGEND (TFR 112) – Useful at 3. Returned with a slightly flat effort but lightly raced and still on the upgrade. Trainer’s recent form very strong, and the trip/ground look ideal.

3. Interesting Outsiders & Notes

MUSTAZEED (TFR 116) – Likes soft ground and ran well in competitive 10f handicaps last term. Long absence a concern but trainer in form.

IMPERIAL SOVEREIGN (TFR 110) – Talented but quirky. New yard now and returns after a break; may want further.

LIEBER POWER (TFR 116) – Solid effort latest, capable on this ground and shaping like this test suits. Balding and Murphy have a good strike-rate at Haydock.

FAYLAQ (TFR 113) – Nine-year-old in fine form, arriving on a hat-trick. Conditions in favour, but more exposed than some and may find this deeper.

4. Runner Ratings (Out of 10)

STEEL TIGER – 8

FOX JOURNEY – 8

CHILLINGHAM – 8

NAQEEB – 7

ALBANY – 7

KILDARE LEGEND – 7

LIEBER POWER – 6

FAYLAQ – 6

GALYX – 5

KING’S CODE – 4

POSTILEO – 3

PRYDWEN – 3 (likely unsuited by pace and long layoff)

Market watch advised for Shader (first handicap), Fox Journey (new yard, off 280 days), and Albany (returning from France).

5. Each-Way Angles (16 runners)

Value could lie with CHILLINGHAM, STEEL TIGER, and FOX JOURNEY who all profile well against the race setup. Shader is short in the market but respected.

6. Private Tissue Estimate

Shader – 9/2

Stressfree – 6/1

Steel Tiger – 13/2

Fox Journey – 15/2

Chillingham – 8/1

Naqeeb – 9/1

Kildare Legend – 10/1

Albany – 10/1

Lieber Power – 12/1

Faylaq – 14/1

Mustazeed – 14/1

Others – 20/1+

Summary

A competitive and deep renewal. Shader is a worthy favourite as a progressive 4yo entering handicaps from a red-hot yard, but this will be a proper test of his temperament. Stressfree and Steel Tiger bring solid recent form into the mix, while Chillingham and Fox Journey rate as serious each-way players if they get the right pace and cover. Watch for market support, particularly for any 4yos stepping out after gelding or those with proven fresh records.
