1. Race Conditions, Pace & Tactical Setup
This is a modest 0–100 handicap hurdle over an intermediate trip on good ground. The pace forecast is very weak, suggesting those racing handily will hold a tactical advantage. PRAIRIE QUEEN looks likely to get an uncontested lead. That will not suit confirmed hold-up horses such as MADEMEWHATIAM, who has tended to race freely and will need plenty of luck in running.

2. Contenders, Dangers, Outsiders, and Notable Trends
Strongest Contenders:
PRAIRIE QUEEN (TFR 107): Runner-up in a novice handicap at Wincanton off this mark when last seen. First start since wind surgery. She’s 3lb out of the handicap but should be well positioned in a slowly-run race. Timeform highlight her as a likely improver. Usually front runs and handles good ground.
DAPPER GENT (TFR 106): Returned from an 8-month break with a fair third at Perth over a shorter trip. Has shaped like a stayer previously and steps up to 2½m here. More to come off 88 if seeing it out.
SQUARE DU ROULE (FR) (TFR 105): Recent third at Newton Abbot was a personal best. Still lightly raced, but was a bit awkward in the finish. Holds form and fitness edge over many.
Main Dangers:
ST PATRICKS BRIDGE (IRE) (TFR 101+): Hasn’t raced under Rules for 650 days but dual pointing success since. Runner-up in points last month. Fergal O’Brien does well with this type, and market confidence would be significant.
SHANTOU LUCKY (IRE) (TFR 100): Inconsistent, but did win decisively last September off a similar mark. Pulled up last time and needs to bounce back. Cheekpieces/tongue-tie remain fitted.
Interesting Outsiders:
MATOURY (TFR 99+): Another returning from a break, ran okay when third here 24 days ago. Poor previous record, though, and stamina for this trip not proven.
GONFALONIER (FR) (TFR ?): Just his second run back from a 28-month layoff. Nicky Richards has a strong record with handicap hurdlers after a break (profit of £41.03 to £1 level stake). However, his Kelso return was moderate.
MADEMEWHATIAM (TFR 105): Poor form and pulled up latest when free-going. Difficult to place much faith unless there’s marked market support.
Trainers with past winners in this race type:
Jessica Bedi won Division II of this race in 2024 with We Gotta Getaway (also aged 7, rated 85), which is the same mark SHANTOU LUCKY carries here.

3. Runner Ratings out of 10
Horse Rating (/10)
PRAIRIE QUEEN 7.5 – Suited by pace, lightly raced, recent peak
DAPPER GENT 7 – Reappearance solid, unexposed at trip
SQUARE DU ROULE 6.5 – Solid recent form, some quirks
ST PATRICKS BRIDGE 6 – Layoff a concern but point form gives hope
SHANTOU LUCKY 5 – Capable but unreliable
MATOURY 4.5 – Needs to build on fair reappearance
GONFALONIER 4 – Layoff and Kelso run both negatives
MADEMEWHATIAM 3.5 – Pull-up last time, pace scenario not ideal
> Keep a close eye on market moves for ST PATRICKS BRIDGE (650 days off), GONFALONIER (205 days off), and PRAIRIE QUEEN (first run since wind op).

4. Each-Way Angles (8 runners)
Only PRAIRIE QUEEN and DAPPER GENT have solid recent form. The each-way angle might be to play the former at 6/1 or bigger if market drifts occur, or include ST PATRICKS BRIDGE if there’s money for him on return.

Dapper Gent – 10/3
Square du Roule – 5/1

6. Summary
A weakly run race over this trip on good ground could hand a tactical edge to PRAIRIE QUEEN, who shaped well on her last start and should be sharper post-wind op. DAPPER GENT also appeals on the back of a fair return and could improve for the longer trip. SQUARE DU ROULE is consistent but carries minor temperament concerns. Watch the market for ST PATRICKS BRIDGE and GONFALONIER, who are long-term absentees returning for trainers with relevant past success.
Market watch essential, particularly for returning or wind-op horses. With 8 runners, small each-way plays are viable at value prices.
