Race Conditions & Pace Assessment:
This is a seven-runner novice hurdle over 2m5f122y on good ground. The pace forecast is very weak, suggesting a muddling early gallop. This likely favours those racing handily or prominently. KNIGHTS AFFAIR is expected to be better positioned than LOCKED DOWN LAD, who may be inconvenienced by the sedate tempo.

Strongest Contenders, Dangers, and Interesting Outsiders:
KNIGHTS AFFAIR (Timeform: 110p): Won readily on hurdling debut at Huntingdon (20.7f, good), showing a good attitude when asked. Previously a fairly useful stayer on the Flat and shaped as though this longer trip holds no fears. With Jamie Snowden in excellent current form, and a prominent racing style well-suited to this scenario, he sets the standard and is open to improvement.
KEEL STRAND (109): Disappointed last time (fifth at Ludlow), but had a wind op since and previously showed fair form. Connections have opted for first-time headgear and he represents a yard with a 29% strike rate at Newton Abbot. His profile is unexposed and he retains potential if the wind surgery proves effective.
CHIEF BLACK ROBE (?): Off for 446 days and now with Barry Brennan. Won four on the spin over fences for Fergal O’Brien in summer 2023 but pulled up when last seen in a hunter. Has the form to feature if retaining ability, but jumping errors and fitness are concerns. Races from off the pace, which may not suit.
OVAL STREET (93): Ran a creditable fourth at this track over shorter last time at 50/1, showing more than in previous starts. A multiple point winner with an attacking style, and could stay on for minor honours again in a thin contest.
HIGHWAY HERO (?): Poor rules form to date but has won twice in points this spring. Yet to show anything under rules, but the recent pointing wins suggest he’s not completely dismissed for a place in this depth.
LOCKED DOWN LAD (–): Poor in bumpers and pulled up on hurdling debut 10 days ago. Likely to be outpaced and will need much more in this company. Hold-up style leaves him at a tactical disadvantage.
MR DAYTONA (–): Pulled up on hurdling debut and underwent a breathing op prior. Early days, but nothing to recommend him on form and others make more appeal.

Runner Ratings out of 10 (with market watch notes):
Knights Affair – 9/10 – Leading chance with scope to improve. Positive trainer form.
Keel Strand – 7.5/10 – Wind op and headgear could unlock improvement. Check market for support.
Chief Black Robe – 6.5/10 – Capable on past chase form. Long layoff and trainer change noted. Market useful.
Oval Street – 6/10 – Small each-way squeak for a place on recent run. Will race handily.
Highway Hero – 4.5/10 – Winning pointer but no rules form; market could guide.
Locked Down Lad – 3/10 – Little encouragement in recent efforts and poor tactical setup.
Mr Daytona – 2.5/10 – Needs significant improvement from Plumpton debut; long-term project.

Private Tissue Estimate:
Knights Affair – 10/11
Keel Strand – 3/1
Chief Black Robe – 10/1
Oval Street – 16/1
Highway Hero – 25/1
Locked Down Lad – 40/1

Summary:
A modest novice hurdle in which KNIGHTS AFFAIR is expected to uphold his unbeaten hurdles record, particularly with a favourable pace setup and strong yard form. KEEL STRAND is the likeliest danger if the wind op and headgear combination sparks progress. CHIEF BLACK ROBE holds older form that entitles him to respect but faces a few questions after a long absence. OVAL STREET might run into a minor place, having shown better signs recently. A small field and weak pace suggest tactical positioning could be crucial.
