1. Race Conditions & Pace Angle
This is a Group 1 contest for older horses over the Derby trip of a mile and a half. The pace is forecast to be very weak, which may pose problems for confirmed hold-up types. The draw is neutral at this trip, and positioning will likely matter more than stall number.
Timeform note the predicted lack of pace may not suit CALANDAGAN, who typically comes from off the speed, whereas JAN BRUEGHEL, who usually races prominently, may be ideally placed.

2. Contenders, Dangers & Outsiders
Strongest Contender
CALANDAGAN (140) – A high-class French-trained gelding with a Royal Ascot Group 2 on his CV, plus placings behind City of Troy and Danon Decile. He was arguably unsuited by tactical setups in all three Group 1 defeats and still ran with credit. The Sheema Classic second on reappearance reads strongly. That said, a slow gallop is a concern for a late closer, so he’ll need luck in running.
Main Danger
JAN BRUEGHEL (130p) – Last year’s St Leger winner who resumed with a narrow defeat in a 10f Alleged Stakes. That trip was on the short side, and he should relish this return to 1½m. Prominent style plays well with today’s expected tactical scenario. Has form on both soft and firm and appears straightforward. Still progressing.
Also Respected
GIAVELLOTTO (136) – Top-level 1½m performer, including a Group 1 win in Hong Kong in December. He too was held up when fifth behind Danon Decile in the Sheema Classic, and the sectionals confirm he was poorly placed. Though best known for staying, his top performances have come at this trip. Mustn’t be underestimated if they go stronger than expected.
Interesting Outsiders
BELLUM JUSTUM (127) – A Newmarket Group 2 winner last time in cheekpieces, which are retained. That was a steadily run race and he finished off strongly. Has won here and in the US. Trainer Andrew Balding is in form.
ANCIENT WISDOM (128) – Won the Bahrain Trophy last summer and shaped well when second in the Gordon Richards last time. Eased in grade here but faces stronger stayers and might be better suited to slightly shorter.
YOU GOT TO ME (129) – Irish Oaks winner, second in the Yorkshire Oaks, but tailed off in the St Leger and hasn’t been seen since. Long layoff to overcome (265 days). Returns in new ownership; market check advised.
CONTINUOUS (125) – Not shown much since a decent effort in Riyadh in February. Looked regressive and unreliable in recent starts, including when last in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Now blinkered again. Big price reflects chance.
Notable Trends & Trainer Pointers
Aidan O’Brien has trained 2 winners in the last 10 runnings and is represented by JAN BRUEGHEL and CONTINUOUS.
Horses returning off 90+ days: YOU GOT TO ME (265d) and JAN BRUEGHEL (55d).
Marco Botti has a positive level stakes profit (+£11.91) with single runners at flat meetings (GIAVELLOTTO).

3. Ratings out of 10 (based on Timeform ratings, profile strength, and tactical fit)
CALANDAGAN – 9/10 – Best form, but pace concern.
JAN BRUEGHEL – 8.5/10 – Ideal scenario for his style, big player.
GIAVELLOTTO – 8/10 – Solid and adaptable, mustn’t be dismissed.
BELLUM JUSTUM – 7/10 – Improving and in-form yard, possible surprise.
YOU GOT TO ME – 6.5/10 – Classy filly but huge layoff; market crucial.
ANCIENT WISDOM – 6/10 – Nice colt but probably not at this level.
CONTINUOUS – 4/10 – Out of sorts, opposable.
Watch market moves for:
YOU GOT TO ME (265 days off, now with new connections).
JAN BRUEGHEL (off 55 days but stable often sharp).
CALANDAGAN (62 days off; value dips if the market turns cold late).

4. Each-Way Angle
Not applicable – fewer than 8 runners.
—
5. Private Tissue Estimate
CALANDAGAN – 5/6
JAN BRUEGHEL – 7/2
GIAVELLOTTO – 6/1
BELLUM JUSTUM – 12/1
YOU GOT TO ME – 14/1
ANCIENT WISDOM – 25/1
CONTINUOUS – 66/1

6. Summary
CALANDAGAN sets the standard and holds the best adjusted ratings, though his hold-up style may leave him hostage to a modest pace. If things unfold tactically, he should finally land a Group 1. JAN BRUEGHEL looks the main danger given his progressive profile and likely race position, while GIAVELLOTTO offers solid form and value for those looking beyond the front two. Market support for YOU GOT TO ME after a long break would be significant.
