15:50 MUSSELBURGH – EDINBURGH CUP HANDICAP (Class 2, 3yo, 1m208y, £25,770)Going: Good to Firm (Good in places)Field Size: 8 runners

·

Pace Forecast: Strong
Draw Bias: No noted draw bias

Pace/Draw Angles:
Musselburgh often rewards front-runners over this trip, but with a strong gallop expected, the advantage could swing to those held up off the pace. CITY OF GOD and THUNDER WONDER are likely pace-forcers, while REGALIAN, I AM ME, and ZARATHOS may benefit if the race becomes a test of stamina late on.

Leading Contenders:

REGALIAN (William Haggas / Cieren Fallon) – Adjusted TFR: 106p
Improved with each start and shaped like a horse needing further when third in a solid Newbury handicap last time. Has been gelded and now fitted with blinkers. This step up to 9f is expected to suit, and with Haggas’s strong mid-season strike rate (24%), he’s a worthy favourite on profile. Still unexposed and open to progression.

ZARATHOS (Dylan Cunha / Silvestre De Sousa) – Adjusted TFR: 105
A consistent sort who has hit the frame in all five starts this season. Just touched off at Nottingham last time and clearly handles quick ground. His finishing style should be well served by the likely pace collapse. Still a maiden, but no reason he can’t figure again if the gaps open.

I AM ME (Edward Bethell / Connor Beasley) – Adjusted TFR: 100
Course winner in April and far from disgraced at Ascot last time when making a premature move. First-time cheekpieces applied and shaped previously as if 9f would suit. Should be thereabouts if getting a smooth run behind the leaders.

Main Dangers and Notables:

THUNDER WONDER (Charlie Johnston / Joe Fanning) – Adjusted TFR: 104
Won decisively at this course earlier in the season. Flopped at Haydock last time after getting upset in the stalls, but could easily bounce back at a track he’s shown an affinity for. Prominent style might be blunted by the pace today.

CITY OF GOD (K.R. Burke / Sam James) – Adjusted TFR: 102
Likes to get on with things and did too much too soon last time at Haydock in a warm race. Likely to be among the leaders again, but with several pace angles, the concern is whether he can conserve enough to finish strongly. Sam James rides Musselburgh well (22% strike rate).

WE DARE TO DREAM (David O’Meara / Paul Mulrennan) – Adjusted TFR: 101
Ran respectably in a strong Newmarket race after winning narrowly at Beverley. Usually races close up, which could be a disadvantage today. Not dismissed for minor honours but will need to find more to win this.

Interesting Outsider:

PAPPA LOUIS (Tom Dascombe / Rhys Elliott) – Adjusted TFR: 104
Runner-up at Chester last week over further and has been slowly finding form. Can blow the start, but if breaking better today and the race collapses late, he could stay on for a place. Susceptible to traffic, however.

BASSADANZA (Charlie Johnston / Andrew Mullen) – Adjusted TFR: 94
Returning from 217 days off and needs to prove he retains ability shown last autumn. Sixth in a listed race at Newmarket when last seen. Best watched unless the market speaks very strongly.

Trainers with Previous Wins in Race:

Charlie Johnston trained Watcha Matey, winner in 2024. His two runners (THUNDER WONDER and BASSADANZA) merit respect on this basis, particularly the former who has course form.

Runner Ratings (Out of 10):

REGALIAN – 9/10 – Unexposed, improving, and the setup should suit. Blinkers could sharpen him.

ZARATHOS – 8.5/10 – Consistent and suited by race shape. Hasn’t yet won, which is a slight negative.

I AM ME – 8/10 – Still improving and should be suited by pace and trip combination.

THUNDER WONDER – 7/10 – Capable, but vulnerable if not relaxed pre-race. Could still bounce back.

CITY OF GOD – 7/10 – Has raw ability but too much early energy may be costly again.

WE DARE TO DREAM – 6.5/10 – Needs to prove he’s up to this level but not without a place shout.

PAPPA LOUIS – 6.5/10 – Needs a lot to fall right, but not impossible at a price.

BASSADANZA – 5.5/10 – Layoff raises doubts and profile suggests he’ll come on for the run.

Market Watch Advice:

BASSADANZA returns from 217 days off – market support would be notable.

REGALIAN has been gelded and fitted with blinkers – improvement expected but needs watching pre-race.

PAPPA LOUIS is running again quickly after a strong run at Chester – in-form sprinters returning quickly can be dangerous.

Second Handicap Start Watch: REGALIAN and I AM ME are both on their second handicap run – market can be telling in these cases.

Each-Way Angles (8 runners):

ZARATHOS – A consistent place-getter in solid form. Can run on into a place.

PAPPA LOUIS – If the pace collapses and he gets a clean run, could be a lively outsider.

Private Tissue Estimate:

Regalian – 5/2

Zarathos – 9/2

I Am Me – 6/1

Thunder Wonder – 13/2

City of God – 15/2

We Dare To Dream – 9/1

Pappa Louis – 10/1

Bassadanza – 16/1

Summary:

This looks a good opportunity for Regalian, who appeals most on profile and performance. His Newbury third reads well in the context of this race, and he should relish the stronger pace and longer trip. Zarathos is knocking on the door and appeals as a solid each-way prospect in a truly-run race. I Am Me and Thunder Wonder rate next best, though both could be reliant on how the race unfolds tactically. Market interest in Bassadanza would be noteworthy given the long absence.
