15:55 NAVAN – DARLEY IRISH EBF KOOYONGA STAKES (Listed Race) (3yo+ fillies & mares, 1m 30y, €33,000)Going: Good | Field: 14 runners

·

Pace Forecast: Extreme
Draw Bias: No clear draw bias reported

Pace/Draw Overview:
Navan’s round mile typically suits prominent racers, but the strong predicted pace here may play into the hands of those ridden more patiently. Barnavara, usually ridden close-up, could be compromised by this pace scenario, while those like Queen of Thunder and Evening Blossom, who finish strongly, may find conditions tilting in their favour.

Leading Contenders

Red Letter [8/10] – Brings standout form to the table, having contested the 1000 Guineas on her seasonal return. She didn’t get the best run that day, racing away from the main pack, and Timeform suggests that wasn’t a true reflection of her ability. Previously bolted up in a Curragh maiden and holds a Timeform rating of 114p, highest in the field. A strong traveller, ideally suited to this mile and well drawn. Remains with scope.

Queen of Thunder [7/10] – Lightly raced and progressive; made a strong winning return at Killarney. Has the pace and shape of a Listed filly, and Timeform flags her as a potential improver (106p). She’ll likely be ridden patiently, which could suit if the pace collapses. Trainer Ken Condon has a good record with improving fillies stepping up in grade.

Barnavara [6/10] – Solid performer at this level. She’s consistent and ran with credit in the Athasi Stakes last time (3rd of 11). However, tends to race prominently, and with the predicted end-to-end gallop, her usual tactics may leave her vulnerable late. Still, her Timeform rating of 109 keeps her in the mix.

Evening Blossom [6/10] – Comes here off the back of a Limerick win in heavy ground, where she showed determination under pressure. Her overall profile is that of a gritty handicapper now nudging her way into black-type class. The strong pace will help, but she needs to improve again to feature.

Thalara [6/10] – Consistent and battle-hardened at this level. Ran well behind Lord Massusus and Madam Celeste in recent Listed events. Tends to settle midfield, so no issue with race shape. Not flashy, but genuine and handles a range of ground. Each-way player at a fair price.

Interesting Outsiders / Notes

Fleur de Chine [5/10] – Best efforts in the autumn in softer ground. Needed her return, and while she’s capable of better, she may just need more ease underfoot to be at her most effective.

Spicy Margarita [5/10] – Outclassed in better company but has shown minor promise. Strong pace may help her settle, but she’ll need to find more off the bridle.

Indigo Five [4/10] – Won at the Curragh earlier in the spring, but her last run was disappointing. The suspicion is she’s regressing slightly.

Wannabe Royal [4/10] – Won a weak Limerick maiden but was thrashed back in pattern class next time. Possible market springer given Joseph O’Brien’s record and this being her second run after a break.

Banner Beauty [4/10] – Lightly raced and won well last time but that was a maiden and she’ll need a leap forward. Watch the market.

Significant Trainer Trends

Joseph O’Brien runs four (Evening Blossom, Princess Child, Soft Winds, Wannabe Royal). He’s a trainer in red-hot form and worth respecting. Evening Blossom is perhaps the most reliable of his quartet.

No previous winning trainers listed for this race – it’s still a relatively new contest on the calendar.

> Market watch advised for:

Wannabe Royal and Banner Beauty (second start runners after maiden wins).

Soft Winds, Quadruple, and Fleur de Chine (90+ days off recently – any sustained support could be revealing).

Red Letter: if strong in the market, would confirm confidence following a Guineas run that lacked a fair shake.

Each-Way Angles (14 runners)

Thalara: Reliable, proven in Listed races, and should be staying on if the leaders overcook things.

Queen of Thunder: Unexposed and improving; represents the classic “Listed race improver” profile.

Private Tissue Estimate

Red Letter – 2/1

Queen of Thunder – 11/2

Barnavara – 7/1

Thalara – 15/2

Evening Blossom – 9/1

Fleur de Chine – 14/1

Spicy Margarita – 16/1

Indigo Five – 20/1

Wannabe Royal – 20/1

Banner Beauty – 25/1

Princess Child – 33/1

Soft Winds – 40/1

Quadruple – 50/1

Calrissiana – 66/1

Summary

Red Letter brings genuine class to the race and was far from disgraced in the Guineas. If repeating her Curragh maiden performance, she sets the standard. Queen of Thunder and Thalara appeal as improvers and pace-strong contenders respectively, while Barnavara may find the predicted tempo works against her. Market strength behind lightly raced types like Wannabe Royal and Banner Beauty should be noted. The race could be tactically interesting, with stamina and a late kick likely to count.
