A Class 4 0–120 handicap hurdle over a sharp extended two miles at Hexham. The field of eight will face a course that favours stamina late on due to the testing uphill finish, although the early stages are less demanding.
Pace forecast is weak, which is often a disadvantage for hold-up runners at this trip here. Prominent racers tend to be favoured when there’s little early tempo. This shapes the race tactically in favour of those who can travel well and position themselves up front.

1. Strongest Contenders, Main Dangers & Interesting Outsiders
Strongest Contenders:
MACK THE MAN [TFR 126] – Back to form when second at Perth (Class 3), off 108 now in Class 4 and looks well handicapped judged on past wins. Best when able to race prominently, and the forecast weak pace enhances his claims. Vulnerable to sharper types at this trip but has form in the book and may get the run of things here.
SURREY BELLE [TFR 125] – Looked progressive before disappointing at Kelso (soft, strong pace), but bounced back on the Flat since and remains on a workable mark. Clearly travels strongly and goes forward, which is a positive at Hexham. Must prove the Kelso run was a blip. Tongue-tie remains. 38% strike rate for Brian Hughes on hurdling favourites is notable.
Main Dangers:
BASHFUL [TFR 124] – Previously won two from three before a fair sixth in a deeper Perth race. Handles varying ground and races kindly just off the pace. Down in class and back to a smaller field, he’s a live threat if the race unfolds evenly.
GLORY AND HONOUR [TFR 123] – Consistent and versatile but not obviously thrown in. Below form of late but capable when conditions suit, though most wins have come chasing or with headgear which is not now applied. Returns to hurdles off a reduced mark, though.
Interesting Outsiders:
BOOK OF SECRETS [TFR 120] – Shaped well behind a well-treated winner when last seen in June 2024 at Cartmel (6¼ lengths third), travelling strongly before fading. Lightly raced in recent seasons and open to improvement off 101, especially with a 10lb claimer on board. 342-day layoff warrants market watch.
THE NAVIGATOR [TFR 123] – Veteran with patchy profile but remains capable on his day. Often needs a strong pace to be seen to best effect. Better with cut underfoot. 10yo now and may find one or two better handicapped.
Others:
MOJO EGO [TFR 124] – No real form in recent outings, including a tailed-off reappearance at Cartmel. Strongly held on recent evidence and unproven at this trip. Usually held up, which is a tactical negative.
HOURLESS [TFR ?] – 4lb out of the handicap and has been out of sorts for some time. Wins here last year are a positive (course winner), but recent form very poor and now 13lb wrong with the top weight on adjusted terms. Likely needs a major revival.

Mack The Man – 7/2
Surrey Belle – 4/1

Summary
A tactical race looks in store with few guaranteed front-runners. Mack The Man is best placed to capitalise, coming off a strong run in a higher grade and likely to be suited by race conditions. Surrey Belle is respected if the Kelso effort can be forgiven, while Bashful returns to calmer waters and should go well. Book of Secrets is the value each-way play, but needs watching in the market off a long break.
Market guidance is key, especially for those returning from absences or changing tactics. Watch for late support or notable drifts.
