13:50 GOODWOOD – GOODWOOD HORSERACING CLUB HANDICAP (Class 3, 6f, 4yo+, 0–90, Soft ground)

·

Pace/Draw Angle: An even pace is predicted, which should suit prominent or tracking types rather than hold-up horses, who may need luck in running. Fine Interview is expected to be better positioned than Gunfighter in this regard. Draw bias is considered negligible on soft ground over this straight 6f.

Strongest Contenders

FINE INTERVIEW (FR) – Timeform Adjusted Rating: 106
Front-runner who progressed well in the second half of 2024, scoring three wins from 6f to 7f. Was a close third in a deep Doncaster handicap on return before a slightly underwhelming effort at Haydock on good ground. Back on soft today, which suits better. Consistent profile, expected to be prominent. Races off a mark of 91.
Timeform note: “Weighted to go well if back to his best.”
Risk: None on pace or ground; no excuses if in form.
Trainer: Hamad Al Jehani (unexposed UK runner).
Verdict: Leading chance.

KNEBWORTH – Timeform Adjusted Rating: 105
Front-runner who made all at Newbury on heavy last backend and shaped well behind Chairmoanoftheboard here in May. Blinkers retained; soft ground suits; and Ethan Jones takes off 5lb. Still well treated on peak efforts.
Trainer: Richard Hughes – yard in form.
Risk: Needs to settle better than last time.
Verdict: Dangerous if getting soft lead.

CINQUE VERDE – Timeform Adjusted Rating: 103
Back to form last time with a strong late run into second over 5f here. Multiple AW wins earlier this year and effective on soft turf. Has shaped like 6f is ideal.
Trainer: Tony Carroll – in form and knows how to exploit form streaks.
Timeform comment: “Thriving this year and fancied to garner a third victory.”
Verdict: Genuine contender, may benefit from stiff finish.

Dangers & Outsiders

MISTER BLUEBIRD – Timeform Adjusted Rating: 103
Returned in decent form at Musselburgh before a weaker run here last time. Soft ground no problem and has a win here in the past. May be vulnerable to improvers.
Trainer: Heather Main – cold patch.
Verdict: Needs to bounce back but has course form. Place claims.

WODAO (FR) – Timeform Adjusted Rating: 103
Second here last year in similar ground and company. Below that form since and not shaping with obvious zest. Usually held up, which isn’t ideal with today’s setup.
Verdict: Hard to rule out on one standout piece of course form but risky.
Watch: Returning from a 211-day layoff – market move key.

GUNFIGHTER (IRE) – Timeform Adjusted Rating: 104
Ex-Hugo Palmer runner who returned from a long absence with a quiet AW run. Likely needed that and is down in class. Held up, which is a concern today.
Verdict: Fitness and running style both questions. 2nd run back – market worth monitoring.

EMINENCY (IRE) – Timeform Adjusted Rating: 102
Has had a wind op. Often slowly away and inconsistent. Third run since return, so may strip fitter now, but recent form uninspiring.
Verdict: Risky but has backform in soft. Unlikely unless bouncing back strongly.

Runner Ratings out of 10

FINE INTERVIEW (FR) – 9

KNEBWORTH – 8.5

CINQUE VERDE – 8

MISTER BLUEBIRD – 6.5

WODAO (FR) – 6 (market important, long layoff)

GUNFIGHTER (IRE) – 5 (hold-up type, off 76 days)

EMINENCY (IRE) – 5 (needs to bounce back, slowly away)

Note: Runners with 90+ days off – Wodao. Trainer intent and market support essential here. Watch also for positive moves on Gunfighter on second run back.

Private Tissue Estimate (100%)

FINE INTERVIEW – 2/1

KNEBWORTH – 4/1

CINQUE VERDE – 5/1

MISTER BLUEBIRD – 8/1

WODAO – 10/1

EMINENCY – 12/1

GUNFIGHTER – 14/1

Summary

A tightly knit 7-runner sprint where Fine Interview stands out on adjusted ratings and suitability to conditions, with Knebworth the danger if allowed to dictate. Cinque Verde arrives in excellent heart and should be finishing strongly. Conditions and pace setup make it tougher for confirmed hold-up types like Gunfighter and Wodao, the latter also needing to prove fitness off a long break. With no draw bias, tactics and ground handling will decide this. Market signals will be key, especially for those returning or second up.
