20:20 FONTWELL PARK – RJS Waste Management UK Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle (Class 5)2m3f29y | 4yo+ | 0-95 | Good (Good to Soft in places) | 7 declared

·

This is a 0–95 novices’ limited handicap hurdle over 2m3f at Fontwell. The pace forecast is uncontested, with BERKSHIRE LAD expected to get an easy lead. Races over this intermediate trip at Fontwell can suit those able to dictate, particularly when there’s no competition for the front. In such setups, patiently-ridden runners can struggle unless significantly better handicapped or tactically astute.

2. Contenders, Dangers, Outsiders, and Notable Trends

Strongest Contender

MARKET HOUSE (TFR 103):

A fair Flat performer (rated in the mid-60s), who’s shaped progressively over hurdles.

Won on the Flat at Brighton in May, and then ran a close second over hurdles at Market Rasen just 8 days ago.

That came off the same mark he races from today (91), and he retains the partnership with Sean Bowen (47% strike rate on hurdling favourites).

Still lightly raced in this code and looks to have turned the corner.

Timeform comment highlights his consistency and imminent breakthrough.

Main Danger

JUSTICE ROLL (TFR 96):

Has yet to fire over hurdles but showed fair form on the Flat (1 win, 2 places in 2024).

Trainer switch to Gary & Josh Moore is notable at this level. Now enters handicaps for the first time.

First run for 174 days, so fitness a potential issue—but Moore yard has a solid record bringing them back ready.

First-time hood didn’t help on final start last term, but the booking of Caoilin Quinn offsets some weight.

Profile flag suggests scope for better now handicapping. Market watch advised.

Interesting Outsider

BERKSHIRE LAD (TFR 100):

Modest overall profile but may benefit greatly from today’s expected tactical setup.

He’s the likely uncontested leader and has shaped best on sound surfaces.

Faded at Ffos Las last time (off 11 weeks), but entitled to strip fitter.

Sheehan rides Fontwell well (26% strike rate).

Others of Note

MERAKI MIST (TFR 102): Returns from 187 days off, but was shaping okay when last seen. Breathing op since.

MARLEY HEAD (TFR 100): Breathing op last year, moderate Flat form, and poor hurdling profile to date. Now gets Gingell’s claim and has had a recent run (7th at Newton Abbot).

BANNY HILL LASS (TFR 97): Slight improvement on last run but still poor overall. Needs to step forward again.

OF CORSE I CAN (TFR not rated): Hard to fancy based on poor past form and long layoff profile.

Race Trends and Notes

The last two winners (2024 Div I & II) were aged 6 and carried 12-0; both returned from 7lb or 8lb higher than bottom weight, suggesting some class edge can count.

None of today’s runners are last-time-out winners, but MARKET HOUSE went very close 8 days ago, a common feature in past winners of this type of contest.

3. Runner Ratings out of 10

(Form, profile, adjusted rating, fitness, and tactical position all considered)

MARKET HOUSE – 9/10 🔹 Solid form, peak fitness, trainer in form, strong claims

JUSTICE ROLL – 7/10 🔹 Unexposed handicap debutant, respected connections, watch market

BERKSHIRE LAD – 6.5/10 🔹 Likely easy lead, fitter now, but exposed at this level

MERAKI MIST – 6/10 🔹 Long layoff but some form and had wind op

MARLEY HEAD – 5/10 🔹 Poor recent efforts but fit and down in grade

BANNY HILL LASS – 4.5/10 🔹 Slight upturn but overall weak profile

OF CORSE I CAN – 3/10 🔹 No solid recent form, long absence, trainer out of form

🟨 Caution for long layoffs: JUSTICE ROLL (174 days), MERAKI MIST (187 days), and OF CORSE I CAN (102 days) – all market checks advised. Any support could indicate readiness.

4. Each-Way Angle

Only 7 runners – no each-way terms under standard place rules.

5. Private Tissue Estimate (100%)

MARKET HOUSE – 11/8

JUSTICE ROLL – 3/1

BERKSHIRE LAD – 13/2

MERAKI MIST – 7/1

MARLEY HEAD – 10/1

BANNY HILL LASS – 14/1

OF CORSE I CAN – 25/1

6. Summary

This looks a strong opportunity for MARKET HOUSE, who arrives in peak form following a narrow defeat just 8 days ago and remains on the same mark. He sets the standard. JUSTICE ROLL is unexposed and makes his handicap debut for a good yard—definitely one to watch in the market after 174 days off. BERKSHIRE LAD could be the tactical beneficiary of a solo lead if left alone, while MERAKI MIST and MARLEY HEAD need to step up significantly to figure. Market interest in any of the returning trio could be informative.
