16:25 Sandown – Irene Carey Memorial Handicap (Class 5)Race Conditions: 7f | 3yo only | £4,449 | Handicap (0–75) | Good ground | 12 runners

·

Pace & Tactical Setup:

This 7f Sandown handicap is forecast to feature a strong early gallop. Typically, Sandown’s round course over 7f can favour prominent racers, particularly in smaller fields, but in this bigger, well-contested field, the sustained pace might level the playing field somewhat. However, late runners will still need luck in running. Panama Black is expected to be prominent early but may face pressure from several front-runners including Miss Collada, Last Shamardal and Brave Byreflection.

Main Contenders & Key Profiles:

KOSOMETSUKE (Adjusted Rating: 90)

Lightly raced and improving. Gelded prior to winning on the AW at Kempton, then showed further progress when a neck second at Salisbury in a strong race that’s beginning to work out well. Tactically versatile, has shown effectiveness on turf and all-weather, and is drawn to get a smooth passage. Silvestre De Sousa retains the ride and Varian has this one primed. Form reads well and the strength of recent runs makes him the most likely winner.

LAST SHAMARDAL (Adjusted Rating: 87)

Reliable type who ran well in a big-field York handicap last time. Tactically sharp and likely to race prominently again under Tom Marquand. Proven on firm ground and one of the few with experience in larger fields. Solid option with no obvious flaws.

BRAVE BYREFLECTION (Adjusted Rating: 86+)

The “Horse in Focus” runner from Timeform. Unlucky at Haydock, trapped in traffic and finished with running left. Lightly raced and bred to be better than this grade. Alice Haynes’ yard is effective with 3yo handicappers and this one may well go forward again.

MISS COLLADA (Adjusted Rating: 86)

Comes from a hot Richard Hannon yard and posted a solid effort when fourth in the same York race as Last Shamardal. Returns quickly and appears to be working back into form. Likeable attitude and track should suit.

PANAMA BLACK (Adjusted Rating: 88)

Bit more exposed but his mark is fair and recent form has been respectable. Acts on varying surfaces and runs well from the front. Stall 2 is an asset if he can get the rail and relax, but risks getting softened up by others around him.

Lively Outsiders & Market Monitors:

ASHEN (84) – Lightly raced, often slowly away but showed a little more last time. Trip suits and likely improver with experience. Needs a pace collapse and clean run.

JET PACKER (85) – Has shaped better than bare results suggest and excuses last time. New stable going OK and could easily outrun his mark if getting a smooth trip.

MASTER OF ZEST (84) – Slightly unpredictable but showed a bit more last time in blinkers. First-time visor now and has run well on turf previously. Needs to step forward again.

GOLDEN THORN (80) – On turf for the first time. Trainer stats suggest this is an angle to watch (profit on AW-to-turf switchers). Has shown some ability and any support would be notable.

Lower Rated or Risky Profiles:

EVERYONEKNOWSADAVE (85) – Below form since yard switch. Did trade shorter in running last time but lacks consistency.

ICONIC TIMES (83) – Completely tailed off at Ascot on return. Trainer profitable with single runners at flat meetings but needs a revival.

AMICA (78) – Big step up needed based on current evidence. Yard can improve them with time but likely needs more distance on breeding.

Trainer & Market Angles:

Jack Channon (Last Shamardal) and Andrew Balding (Golden Thorn) have strong profit stats in relevant scenarios.

Roger Varian (Kosometsuke) typically excels with improving types in this grade.

Market movements on turf debutants (Golden Thorn, Ashen) and seasonal returnees (Iconic Times) worth monitoring.

Ratings Out of 10:

Last Shamardal 8.5 Consistent and drawn well to race handily
Brave Byreflection 8.0 Forgive last run, well treated if stepping up
Miss Collada 8.0 Big field experience, strong York form
Panama Black 7.5 Solid mark, may face pace pressure
Jet Packer 7.0 Improving, stable switch interesting
Ashen 6.5 Needs a break to fall right, slowly away risk
Master of Zest 6.5 Blinkers worked, visor a further tweak
Golden Thorn 6.5 Unknown on turf, but not dismissed
Everyoneknowsadave 5.5 Hard to catch right since yard change
Iconic Times 5.0 Risky on Ascot reappearance form
Amica 4.5 Inexperienced, could be one for later at 1m+

Private Tissue Estimate:

Kosometsuke – 11/4

Last Shamardal – 4/1

Brave Byreflection – 11/2

Miss Collada – 6/1

Panama Black – 13/2

Jet Packer – 10/1

Ashen, Golden Thorn, Master of Zest – 12/1+

Others – 16/1+

Each-Way Angles (12 runners):
Brave Byreflection is of serious interest with more to come and excuses last time. Jet Packer may be a touch underestimated if things fall right.

Summary:

Kosometsuke is the clear top pick on form and profile, coming into this off a strong Salisbury second and with a trainer adept at placing progressive 3yos. Last Shamardal has big-field experience and could dictate proceedings if getting early control, while Brave Byreflection is open to a good deal of improvement and shaped well last time. Keep tabs on the market for Golden Thorn (turf debut) and Ashen (hidden runs). Likely a race where positioning and race-riding will make the difference.
