Pace, Track & Tactical Context
The pace projection is strong, which often proves decisive over this extended 7f at Chester, especially with the tight turns. Historically, it’s a track where prominent racers are favoured unless the field goes hard early. Given the makeup here—with natural pace from Super Hit, Jack Daniel, Dappled Light and That’s My Boy Luke—hold-up runners like John L Sullivan and Original Thinker could be favoured late if the front group overcooks it.
Draw bias is typically sharp at Chester, but wide draws can be overcome if the pace collapses or the inside lanes become congested, especially for strong-travelling closers.

Leading Contenders
John L Sullivan (TFR 90)
Flagged as a “Horse in Focus.” Raced lazily on return after a breathing op but caught the eye late and is now second-up. Has form that reads well in stronger northern handicaps last term and returns to Class 5 company. A strong traveller who often needs things to fall right—but with the likely pace, that may suit him. Wide draw actually suits his hold-up style.
Vixey (TFR 84)
In excellent heart this spring. Dual winner already and just touched off at Carlisle last time. She’s uncomplicated and versatile on ground. Aiden Brookes takes off 3lb. Vulnerable to something more progressive but very solid on paper. Has a reliable running style that holds up well around Chester.
Original Thinker (TFR 83)
Back from a long break to win well at Carlisle, defying a pace bias. Races off the speed and will need luck, but Richard Kingscote is a notable booking at this track. Harriet Bethell has a strong record with runners over this trip (21% strike rate). Market watch advised second run back after a break.
Dappled Light (TFR 83)
Won well in small fields at Chepstow and Bath, helped by how both races unfolded. This is more competitive and he’s up in the weights, but in-form and stays further, so won’t be inconvenienced if it turns into a test. Could find this a bit tight if caught wide.
Super Hit (TFR 85)
Trainer Darryll Holland has his string running well. Solid third behind Visibility at Thirsk and well suited by 1m at a track like this. May get involved early but has stayed on late in big fields before. Conditions ideal and doesn’t need to lead.

Notable Others & Outsiders
That’s My Boy Luke (TFR 83) – Consistent and often races handily. Placed on last three starts and has conditions to suit. Maiden status is a concern but is drawn well and may get a good early pitch.
Jack Daniel (TFR 83) – Inconsistent but capable when on a going day. Likes to be up there and Billy Loughnane rides, but tendency to underperform softens appeal.
Highfield Viking (TFR 79) – Needed last run after long absence. Capable of better but not clearly handicapped to strike here.
Alcazan (TFR 84+) – Drops in grade, but form has tailed off and hasn’t shaped like a winner-in-waiting of late. Still dangerous on old form and may be sparked by this ease in class.
Lockdown Lass (TFR 70) – Chester winner in 2023 but recent efforts moderate. Could pick up pieces late but generally opposable.
Bay of Australia (TFR 83) – Long absence, low mark, but profile offers little recent encouragement.

Summary:
This race sets up for a closer, and John L Sullivan could be poised to strike with a strong pace to run at and a fitness edge after his comeback. Vixey and Original Thinker are in the right form and profile category, while Super Hit and Dappled Light can run well again if their positions are right early. The market will tell plenty—particularly for Original Thinker second time off a break and Alcazan now down in grade.
