15:50 Downpatrick – Download The Tote App Handicap Hurdle (4yo+, €9,600, 2m 1f 165y)

·

Good to yielding (yielding in places).
Field: 11 runners declared.
Pace Forecast: Very Strong.

Race Conditions and Tactical Setup

This is a valuable 0–125 handicap hurdle over Downpatrick’s undulating two-mile circuit. With a strong pace expected, hold-up runners with proven stamina should be favoured. Notably, Portnacoo, usually ridden prominently, may be disadvantaged, while a closer such as Tonaghneave Well looks more tactically suited. Downpatrick tends to reward course experience, and several runners – including Portnacoo, Run for Harry, and Ceanndana – have already scored here.

Leading Contenders

Bowensonfire (133 adj)
Progressive 5yo from Gordon Elliott who has won twice this season – most recently off 119 at Tramore. Beat Hasten Slowly there, and the form looks solid. Races prominently but settles well. Stays further and handles cut. Proven against similar opposition and unexposed. Progressive.

Malbay Madness (133 adj)
Lightly raced 5yo from a yard that targets this meeting (trainer has won this race twice in last 8 years). Has won twice in quick succession at Kilbeggan. Unproven at this stiff 2m1½f but finishes strongly. Could be more to come. Progressive and race-fit.

Portnacoo (141 adj)
Very solid in 2024, particularly at this venue (3–3 in Downpatrick handicaps). However, ran poorly last time at Punchestown. A confirmed front-runner, but this strong pace setup is a negative. Stays well and clearly loves the track, but now carries a career-high mark. Proven, but tactical setup not ideal.

Tonaghneave Well (138 adj)
Consistent throughout 2024, and ran well in strong form races at Navan and Fairyhouse. Likely needed comeback run at Cork in April. The very strong pace plays into his hands, and he’s down a pound from that last run. Looks set for a big effort. Progressive and tactically suited.

Extrapolation (137 adj)
Returned over hurdles at Ballinrobe in good shape when runner-up in a small field, having previously won a chase at the same venue. Tends to sit mid-pack and stays well. Has hit low IRs when beaten. Acts on soft but better on sounder ground. Race-fit. Proven but fairly treated now.

Other Notables

Hasten Slowly (135 adj) – Mare who ran second to Bowensonfire latest. Tends to lead or race close up, which might be a disadvantage here. Race-fit and consistent, but form capped.

Dollar Value (140§) – Multiple winner in 2024 but tailed off on last start at Down Royal in November. Hard to assess fitness after 225 days off, but on old form would be competitive. Market will guide.

Ceanndana (135 adj) – Versatile dual-purpose performer with wins at this venue. Solid chase form, though best efforts have come at 2½m+. Off 233 days and likely to come on for the run. Watch market.

Newtown Rambler (134 adj) – Half-brother to Corach Rambler. Won a weak maiden hurdle in October but pulled up last time at Fairyhouse. Stamina looks an asset, but out of sorts.

Summary

A strong pace on a stiff track should reward patience, and Tonaghneave Well is tactically suited to pounce late if back to peak fitness. Bowensonfire is improving fast and clearly well thought of at Cullentra; he has to be respected. Malbay Madness is on a hat-trick and represents a trainer with recent success in this race, though his stamina is unproven beyond sharp 2m tracks.

Shortlist:

1. Bowensonfire – solid win chance on form.

2. Tonaghneave Well – strong pace angle and back class.

3. Extrapolation – underrated profile; solid each-way claims.
