Pace Forecast: Weak

Race Conditions & Tactical Angles

This staying handicap sees 12 runners tackling nearly 1m7f on heavy ground. A modest early gallop is expected, and Timeform’s pace hint suggests a disadvantage for deep closers such as BILLY NO MATES, while AGATHON, who races closer to the speed, may be tactically favoured.

There is no apparent draw bias. Horses that can travel well and race handily without needing a true stamina test are best positioned under today’s conditions.

Leading Contenders

FAST FRED (TFR 80) – 8.5/10
In-form and knocking on the door, notably a closing second at Thirsk last time. The weak pace could again find him too far back, but form is solid. Has run well on heavy before and races off a workable mark.

AGATHON (TFR 78) – 8/10
Course-and-distance winner in May, form franked with a close second since. Stuck on the rail at Catterick latest and not given a clear shot; back to Carlisle is a plus. Generally races handily which is a benefit today.

BILLY NO MATES (TFR 79) – 7.5/10
Consistent and handles heavy ground. Ran a solid race off a break and could be fitter now, but his usual hold-up style is a negative given today’s tactical setup. Best form at slightly longer.

Dangers & Interesting Outsiders

TWOFORTHEGUTTER (TFR 78) – 7/10
Modest profile but has run creditably in recent starts including behind Agathon. Likely to sit off the speed; blinkers help concentration but vulnerable unless tempo increases.

ARCTIC FOX (TFR 78) – 6.5/10
Course specialist with several recent fair runs. Can handle this trip and going, though one-paced and often needing a stronger gallop than is forecast.

BILLY BATHGATE (TFR 77) – 7/10
Strong stayer, ideally suited to 2 miles. Will be doing his best late but similar tactical concern as others—needs a stronger pace. Continues in good order.

AIGHEAR (TFR 76) – 6.5/10
Jim Goldie-trained stayer often overlooked in the market but ran a good second here before a luckless run at Hamilton. Trainer has a profitable record when fielding a single runner.

Form Watch & Risky Profiles

ASHINGTON (TFR ?) – 5/10: Hasn’t shown much since returning from hurdles. Now 10yo and unreliable. A watching brief.

ACHNAMARA (TFR 75§) – 5/10: Exposed and hard to win with. Breathing operation hasn’t sparked improvement; often starts slowly and doesn’t quicken.

PARISH RECORD (TFR 77) – 5/10: Ran a rare promising race last time. Still a maiden and hard to assess but open to improvement.

BOLLIN NEIL (TFR 76) – 5.5/10: Veteran who occasionally places in these staying events but finds winning hard. Best form behind him.

FABULEUX DU CLOS (TFR 66) – 4.5/10: No promise shown on the Flat. Likely prepping for another go over hurdles.

Timeform Trends & Market Notes

Keep an eye on the market for BILLY NO MATES, who returned from a 5-month layoff and may strip fitter.

FAST FRED looks the most progressive, and AGATHON is the most proven over C&D.

AIGHEAR’s trainer Jim Goldie has a notable level stakes profit when sending a single runner to a flat meeting.

Private Tissue Estimate

Fast Fred – 3/1

Billy No Mates – 5/1

Twoforthegutter – 7/1

Arctic Fox – 10/1

Billy Bathgate – 10/1

Summary

This race could turn tactical, which lends weight to horses who can race prominently like Agathon, while Fast Fred is the form horse who needs a little help from the tempo. Billy No Mates has the class but needs the race to fall right. Watch out for each-way market angles, especially on the lightly raced Parish Record.

Smart Play

Back Fast Fred to win – form and ratings justify favouritism.
Consider Agathon as a cover bet – best placed tactically on current profile.
Each-way: Aighear or Arctic Fox – both handle the ground and shape as value plays.
