18:10 Ascot – Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed) (Class 1) – 5f – 2yo Only – £62,381 to the winnerGoing: Good to Firm (Good in places) | Runners: 24 | Draw Bias: Favours High | Pace Forecast: Extreme

·

1. Race Conditions & Tactical Overview

This is a highly competitive Listed 5f sprint for 2yos, traditionally run at a furious early tempo. The pace forecast is extreme, with a swathe of early speed spread across the track. The high numbers are typically favoured on the straight course at Ascot, particularly when the ground is fast, so stalls 18–24 could hold an edge.

Hold-up types often struggle in this, unless there’s a late collapse in the pace. With a 24-runner field and a strong gallop expected, luck in running and positional draw will be vital.

2. Contenders & Profiles

Proven/Progressive/Promising

Rogue Legend (114p) – Proven + Progressive. Has run to a level that would have made him competitive in the Coventry. Made all in strong races at Cork and Tipperary. Suited by an extreme pace and likely to lead or track the speed. Track, trip, and going all in favour. Strongest rating.

Rogue Supremacy (97p) – Promising. Impressive Wetherby debut, quickened clear and looked to have a good attitude. Could rate higher yet.

Old Is Gold (98p) – Progressive. Wide-margin winner at Beverley and placed in a warm Ascot maiden before that. Can travel and quicken. Nicely drawn.

Azizam (93p) – Promising. Bolted up on debut at Hamilton, clearly well above average. Wide draw (23) and unexposed.

First Approach (99) – Proven. Maiden winner at Naas but was well held in the Marble Hill behind Albert Einstein. Track might suit more than Curragh.

Utmost Respect (96P) – Promising. Strong finisher on debut at York having been snatched up; could flourish with strong pace but might need luck.

Tough Critic (93p) – Promising. Keeneland debut winner from the rear; US raiders can go well but draw (21) and style may leave him needing gaps.

Gaga Mate (92p) – Promising. Won easily on debut and yard has sent a good type here before. Middle draw gives flexibility.

Better and Better (97p) – Progressive. Edged out Try Storm Cat at Hamilton, open to improvement but modest speed figures so far.

Shaman Champion (91p) – Progressive. Visual impression at Leicester was strong; quicker ground and fast pace likely to suit.

Jan Steen (95p) – Proven. Solid form behind First Legion at York. Draw (13) not ideal but has substance.

Interesting Outsiders

Gorey Gold (91p) – Promising. Won 5.7f maiden well at Bath; could pick up pieces if race collapses late.

Logi Bear (95) – Proven. Solid performer in mid-tier juvenile contests. Epsom run was decent; track may help.

Havana Hurricane (96) – Proven + Versatile. Consistent over 5/6f. Has tactical speed, but 12 draw means could be marooned.

Dickensian (93) – Proven. Good Musselburgh winner but Ascot effort was fair rather than flashy.

Hold-up Risk / Needs Luck

Utmost Respect, Tough Critic, Logi Bear, Jan Steen, Gorey Gold, Call Me By My Name – All have been ridden from off the pace or shaped that way. In a field of 24, those needing to come through runners may require the cards to fall perfectly.

Trainer Trends

Aidan O’Brien – 3 winners in past 10 years (Little Big Bear 2022 among them). Saddles First Approach (still raw, best judged on Naas win).

Richard Hannon and Kevin Ryan often go mob-handed but have had limited success in this.

Paddy Twomey (Rogue Legend) and David O’Meara (Rogue Supremacy) both have powerful strike rates with 2yos lately.

Market Watch Advice:

Utmost Respect, Tough Critic, Azizam, Rogue Supremacy – all lightly raced and could be significantly better than they’ve shown. Watch for market confidence.

Long layoffs (90+ days) not applicable here, but sharp reappearances (Rogue Legend back out quickly) can be a positive in these 2yo races.

6. Summary + Smart Play

This looks a well-up-to-scratch renewal of the Windsor Castle, and Rogue Legend brings the highest adjusted figure and has the tactical speed to overcome the high draw. Rogue Supremacy is open to major improvement, while Old Is Gold has the right experience and tactical adaptability.

Smart Play:

“Back ROGUE LEGEND win only at 3/1+

Each-way: OLD IS GOLD and AZIZAM (especially if 14/1+)

Keep Rogue Supremacy on side in exotics – double Twomey angle noteworthy

Watch the market on UTMOST RESPECT – could be primed for a big one second time out

This is a field where progressive and proven form against speed figures and stall bias will tell – the draw high and prominent racing tactics could well prove decisive.”
