1. Race Conditions + Tactical Outlook
A Class 5 handicap over just shy of 1m2f for older horses and 3-year-olds, with eight declared runners. The pace projection is even, and at this trip on Ripon’s undulating right-handed track, those who race handily tend to be favoured, particularly when the pace isn’t overly strong. Draw doesn’t show a significant bias in small fields at this distance.
2. Contenders, Dangers and Notables
Bosphorus Rose (Sir Mark Prescott) is the lone 3yo and makes her handicap debut after winning a weak Bath novice last time. She travelled strongly and shaped like a filly well ahead of her mark. With a Timeform ‘p’ attached to her adjusted rating of 75, she brings upside. Prescott has a 24% strike rate with handicap debutants and his mid-season runners frequently progress for extra distance. Likely hold-up tactics add some risk in this field with no guaranteed strong gallop.
Milteye (Harriet Bethell) has run consistently well since switching to this yard, including a solid third to a higher-rated sort at Nottingham. He races prominently, which suits this setup, and his current adjusted rating of 83 puts him right in the mix. Harriet Bethell’s horses are running well and this one has no ground concerns.
Mr Jetman has landed two Ripon handicaps in recent weeks and is clearly suited to the course. He has a running style suited to this setup, usually settling just off the pace, and is in good form. Now 8lb higher than when beginning that run and may find this class ceiling tighter, but Ripon form can count for plenty.
Westernesse drops from a strong York handicap to this lesser grade and has an adjusted rating of 79. He stayed on for fifth that day and, while he’s not particularly progressive, that run represents strong form. His weight is high for this type of race, but this is easier.
Riyadh Gem has run well on the AW and turf this season. This 3yo colt is rated 80 adjusted and brings fair form lines into this, but he might be better suited by a more strongly run race and potentially a step up in trip. Archie Watson has booked a senior jockey and this looks a mid-season target.
Paris Lights has been consistent in defeat, often caught for tactical speed. He races prominently and could get a soft lead if allowed. The Midgley yard remains cold, however, and this one is more exposed than some.
Code Purple has mixed flat and hurdling this year. His recent blowout at Musselburgh is a concern but he does have some solid placed form earlier in the season. The adjusted mark of 78 flatters him on current trajectory.
Evelyn’s Phoenix won three times in 2024 including at this course, but has been largely regressive since. Latest effort was poor and, while Ripon form helps, he looks in the grip of the assessor based on recent figures.
3. Runner Ratings out of 10
- Bosphorus Rose – 8.5/10 – Promising profile, right trainer, well placed for progression.
- Milteye – 8/10 – Progressive, good tactical setup, consistent form.
- Mr Jetman – 7.5/10 – Proven at track, but now higher in the weights.
- Westernesse – 7/10 – Form dropper, but this is a class drop. Ground and trip suit.
- Riyadh Gem – 6.5/10 – Unexposed and reliable; trip and race shape maybe not ideal.
- Paris Lights – 5.5/10 – Consistent, but trainer form poor and tactics predictable.
- Code Purple – 5/10 – Regressive with one poor run to excuse; hard to support.
- Evelyn’s Phoenix – 4/10 – Form tailed off, despite course record.
4. Each-Way Angles
With 8 runners declared, each-way terms apply. Milteye appeals as the each-way angle – he’s consistent, has a positive pace setup, and looks fairly treated.
5. Private Tissue (100% book)
- Bosphorus Rose – 3/1
- Milteye – 9/2
- Mr Jetman – 5/1
- Westernesse – 13/2
- Riyadh Gem – 8/1
- Paris Lights – 10/1
- Code Purple – 14/1
- Evelyn’s Phoenix – 16/1
6. Summary + Smart Play (Professional Punter View)
This small field looks tactically interesting. There’s not much obvious pace, so horses that can race handily or travel smoothly into a slowish-run race will be advantaged. The unexposed Bosphorus Rose brings the best potential and fits a typical Prescott profile of a filly ready to improve sharply now handicapping over a suitable trip. The one niggle is the likely hold-up style in a tactical race.
For those seeking something proven and consistent, Milteye is running well, travels on or near pace, and looks primed to go close again for an in-form stable.
Smart Play:
- Win bet – Bosphorus Rose
- Each-way saver – Milteye
