1. Pace/Draw Profile
This is a nine-runner mile handicap likely to be run at an even tempo. Chelmsford’s Polytrack surface tends to favour prominent racers when the field isn’t overly big, and that will benefit Dubai Beach, Radiant Beauty and Waiting For Love, all of whom are expected to race handily. Sheriff’s Court and Shimmering Spin could be hostage to fortune if dropped in.
2. Contenders, Dangers & Angles
Dubai Beach (Saeed bin Suroor)
Adjusted Rating: 93p
Lightly raced and open to further progress. Scored decisively at Kempton eight days ago on handicap debut with the hood applied and showed a good attitude in the finish. Carries a 5 lb penalty but has scope for better. Trainer has a solid record with unexposed runners at this time of year. Tactically well positioned and stays 1m well. Promising profile.
Radiant Beauty (Dr Richard Newland)
Adjusted Rating: 92
Another with a positive tactical position, she is a proven filly who returned from a short break to win at Kempton with a determined front-running effort. Still feasibly treated on old form and clearly effective at the trip. However, she may not have the same upward potential as Dubai Beach.
Waiting For Love (James Tate)
Adjusted Rating: 92
Unexposed handicap debutante, returning from a 172-day break. Bolted up in a novice at Wolverhampton last December and shaped as a filly with ability. Tate’s runners often improve for their first go in handicaps (17% strike rate). The layoff is a concern, but market support would be significant. Promising profile.
Sheriff’s Court (Sir Mark Prescott)
Adjusted Rating: 91
Imported from France with a Saint-Cloud maiden win. Not disgraced in two UK runs but shaping as if 7f may suit better than 1m. Still early days, and yard known for bringing handicappers forward gradually. Mid-race hold-up tactics may not be ideal in this setup. Trainer has a good strike rate mid-season (24%).
Hitched (David Simcock)
Adjusted Rating: 89
Won twice on the all-weather earlier this year but appears to have levelled off. Poor return at Windsor and not obviously well-handicapped. Needs pace to lift late but is consistent at this trip.
Atlantic Gamble (William Knight)
Adjusted Rating: 82+
Triple Kempton winner last year but form this season has regressed. May be in need of a drop in class or a return to optimum conditions. Could get involved if bouncing back, but nothing in recent efforts screams revival.
Shimmering Spin (Jane Chapple-Hyam)
Adjusted Rating: 79
Has shown glimpses of ability on Polytrack and was second at this track in February. Recent form has dipped, and though he’s had a wind operation, he remains hard to predict.
Coppersmith (Ruth Carr)
Adjusted Rating: 77
Previously progressive for another yard, but long layoff and underwhelming reappearance effort raises concerns. May come forward for that but needs to.
Pitney (Michael Attwater)
Adjusted Rating: Not Rated
Recent efforts have been very poor. Previously a winner at Chester, but that form has not carried forward this season. Plenty to prove.
3. Runner Ratings (Out of 10)
| Horse | Score | Justification |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai Beach | 8.5 | Unexposed, in form, ideal setup |
| Radiant Beauty | 8 | Solid type, right profile, a danger |
| Waiting For Love | 7.5 | Break to overcome, but upwardly mobile |
| Sheriff’s Court | 6.5 | Should improve, drawn OK, race shape tricky |
| Hitched | 5.5 | Not progressing, but consistent sort |
| Atlantic Gamble | 5 | Off-form, but once useful |
| Shimmering Spin | 5 | Needs to bounce back, patchy profile |
| Coppersmith | 4.5 | Layoff concerns, weak comeback |
| Pitney | 3 | Off form, little encouragement recent starts |
4. Each-Way Angles
With 9 runners, standard place terms apply (3 places). Sheriff’s Court may appeal each-way at a price if strong in the market late. Waiting For Love also fits the unexposed, potentially undervalued profile.
5. Private Tissue Estimate
- Dubai Beach – 3/1
- Radiant Beauty – 9/2
- Waiting For Love – 5/1
- Sheriff’s Court – 8/1
- Hitched – 10/1
- Atlantic Gamble – 14/1
- Shimmering Spin – 16/1
- Coppersmith – 25/1
- Pitney – 33/1
Summary
This looks a good opportunity for Dubai Beach, who is the most progressive and tactically best placed. Radiant Beauty brings reliable form and will make this a test if she gets into rhythm. Waiting For Love is interesting off her absence, with trainer trends in her favour and scope for better.
Smart Play – Professional View
Win bet: Dubai Beach – Unexposed filly, ideal conditions, well-drawn, sharp turnaround signals confidence.
Each-way saver: Waiting For Love – Could be ahead of her mark if fit, pedigree and profile suggest upside.
Keep a close eye on the market for Waiting For Love and Sheriff’s Court, especially if there’s late support indicating a go-day.
